He shakes Warren’s hand.

“Warren Carrington, the pleasure is all mine.”

Warren shakes his hand in return.

“Ellie, why don’t you take Syd to her room?” Connor suggests. I’m about to protest because this woman is insane but I hold my mouth.

“No,” Sybil snaps. “I don’t want that woman spending another minute with my daughter.”

“Why the hell not?” Connor asks, placing a hand on each side of his waist. He watches Sybil like she is a walking dramatic play and he’s waiting to see what happens.

“Because Sydney is attached to her,” Sybil responds.

“That’s a good thing, Sybil. I guess now is as good a time as any. . .” Connor pauses and smiles to both Sybil and Warren. There is an air of confidence in him I haven’t seen before. These people are both bullies and he handles them with ease.

“Well, what is it?” Sybil snaps, radiating nervous energy.

“I’ve asked Ellie to be my wife. We’re engaged,” Connor says with a relaxed smile. He then walks over to me and kisses my cheek.

Warren’s brows raise. He stays quiet, but I notice the slight nod of his head as he looks at me. Sybil on the other hand looks like she is going to blow a gasket.

“Excuse me? Are you fucking with me?” Sybil asks Connor.

“What is that supposed to mean? Isn’t a congratulations in order?” he responds coolly.

“Is this some kind of joke? I didn’t even know you were dating this woman. If I did, I sure as hell wouldn’t have agreed to have her join us today. This is low, Connor, even for you.” Sybil paces.

“It’s better if we all get along for Syd’s sake,” he urges Sybil.

“This is bullshit,” she replies. This woman is clearly unhinged, I wish Connor would have warned me in advance his ex is a hothead. Not that it would’ve mattered. I was happy to be there for Syd today. I saw how much she needed me.

“Sybil, you need to calm down. I don’t like you using vulgar language in front of Syd. She doesn’t like it either,” Connor urges.

“I’m going to get my swear jar,” Syd announces. “I finally get to put some money in it.” I want to burst into laughter because she is the sweetest, funniest kid I know. She probably has no money in that jar because Connor always speaks nicely in front of her. But what really gets me is, out of the whole day, she’s chosen now to finally speak up.

“This is fucking great,” Sybil mutters, rubbing her forehead. Syd returns with an empty jar.

“I think you swore five times. You’ll need to fill it up,” she says to Sybil and she’s smiling.

OMG, I’m dying inside. This day has been hell, but this moment is epic.

Sybil’s jaw drops. “I don’t have any money on me, sweetie. Only credit cards, but I’m guessing you don’t take those.”

“Here, I have a bill,” Warren steps in. “This should do.” He places a hundred-dollar bill in her jar and Syd smiles and runs off.

“You need to get a grip, Sybil,” Connor says.

“Are you going to let him talk to me this way?” Sybil asks Warren.

“Not sure what you want me to say, babe. He’s engaged. Let’s wish them congratulations, and maybe we can spend the day with Syd on our own tomorrow.”

“I’ll pick her up tomorrow,” Sybil says to Connor, and she begins to walk away.

“No, you won’t,” Connor replies to her back. “I want to hear how today went. Was Syd comfortable? Did she speak with you?” Sybil spins around seething. “I’m not about to cause my daughter a boatload of anxiety because you’re melting down like a two-year-old.”

Sybil’s lips press together.

I can see why these two didn’t work out.
