I grunt out a huff. “No, we’re in a fight… at least, I think we are. I can’t be sure. I justneedto find her.”

Raid chuckles under his breath. “I got you, brother. Okay, her cell is moving. I think she’s driving by the look of it. Wait… this doesn’t make sense,” he states, sitting forward and typing a little faster.

I try to figure out what he’s seeing but can’t decipher it.

He scratches his head. “Either you pissed her off enough to make her leave town, or… for some reason, she’s on her way out of New Orleans headed toward Baton Rouge.”

My eyes bug out of my head. “Are youfuckingkidding me?” I blurt out.

Raid types a few more things into his keyboard, and a map shows up on the screen with a moving dot, and it is definitely headed toward Baton Rouge. “Nope! I can’t for sure be certain that’s her, but her cell is heading in the direction of the Baton Rouge Bachelors.”

“What the fuck are you doing, Maxxy?” I mumble under my breath.

“What’s the play here, Hoodoo? I can tap into the mic on her cell and see what she’s doing?”

“Will she be able to hear us?” I ask.

“No, it’s a bug I put on her cell, standard issue when she joined Defiance.”

“Do it,” I instruct.

He types away, and then an audio file plays on his computer. It sounds like static, muffled like the cell is in her pocket, which I suppose you would expect. I try to listen closely to see if I can hear anything out of the ordinary, then a breakthrough.

“Look, turn the car around. You don’t have to do this,” Maxxy pleads.

My eyes widen, shooting to Raid. He furiously types as some guy replies, “I said shut up! You talk again, I’m going to pull over, cut out your tongue, and make you eat it.”

Raid cuts the signal as I stand from the desk and begin pacing. “Raid, gimme something, I swear to God!”

He tries to pull up more information. “Grab some brothers and go. Get Jesse to take the van and follow you. I’ll send updates on the location as they come through.Go. Go now, Hoodoo.”

Without hesitation, I turn, yank the door open, and race out into the clubhouse. “Hurricane!” I holler, and he snaps his head around, clearly sensing the fear in my tone, then he, City, and Bayou come rushing over.

“What’s goin’ on?” Hurricane asks.

“Maxxy… she’s been taken by someone. I don’t know who, but they’re on their way to, I can only assume, Baton Rouge because that’s the direction the car is headed. Raid tapped into her cell, and we just heard him threaten to cut her tongue out if she spoke another word. She’s in trouble, Pres.”

He dips his chin in acknowledgment. “Is Raid gonna send us location pings along the way?”

“Yeah, we need Jesse to bring the van, just in case.”

“You got it. Let’s get our girl back,” Hurricane states. “Jesse, Omen, Grit, we’re ridin’ out. Maxxy’s in trouble. Jesse, take the van.”

“You better put some clothes on,” Bayou tells me, and I glance down, remembering I am wearing no shoes or shirt.

Shaking my head, I scrunch up my face. “No time. I need to get to Maxxy. Let’s go!”

I take off, not giving a shit about my lack of clothing, and race for my bike. The other guys follow behind. Jesse jumps in the van, and we take off.

Raid sends the pings to my Apple Watch, so I know exactly where to go.

My palms sweat so much that keeping a solid grip on the throttle is difficult. The wind whips against my bare chest as we fly past cars on the street faster than we ever have before. The passersby stare at me like they can’t believe what they’re seeing. But I don’t give a shit what I look like—all I care about is getting to Maxxy and getting her home.

My stomach churns, thinking about what could happen to her if I can’t get to her in time.

The possibilities are endless.
