“So fucking bad,” I blurt out.

She glances at my chart and exhales. “I can give you another muscle relaxant. It will help with the spasms, and the medications have no correlations with opioids, so they’re completely safe for you.”

Gritting my teeth, I shake my head. “No… nothing.”

She places my chart back and sighs. “Nico, you’ve already been given high doses of it. We had no choice. It’s already in your system. Giving it to you now is only going to help your discom—”

“I saidno, Charlotte!”

She exhales and glances back up at the monitor. “You need to take a few deep breaths, your oxygen levels are dropping, and your heart rate is spiking. I won’t give you the diazepam, but the option is there if it gets too bad, okay?” she asks, not pushing any further, her hand gently returning to my arm, the gesture soothing and comforting. So I slow my breathing and try to relax my stiff and sore muscles. “That’s good, Nico, slow breaths. You need to take it easy for the next few days. Your body has been through a lot.”

“Do you know what the poison was?” I ask.

Charlotte nods. “It was strychnine. You were so lucky that you knew to wash yourself and the protocols to implement. If you didn’t take those measures, you might be in a whole different world of hurt right now.”

“How long am I going to be in here?” I ask.

“You were brought in yesterday, and from what Dr. Adams is saying, I think you’ll be here for a few more days, then you can go home and recover. From what we’ve seen in the waiting room, you have a large group of people here to support you.”

“Charlotte…” I almost whisper.

“Yeah?”

“Am I going to be okay? Will I go back to normal function?”

She tightens her grip on my arm and warmly smiles. “You’re going to make a full recovery, but you might be weak for a while.”

“Thanks, Charlotte… sorry for yelling at you.”

She lets out a small chuckle. “Oh, it’s fine. I’ve had far worse than that over the years. And you have your reasons. I respect that. But youdohave options. I’m not pushing them on you. Let’s be clear about that. But… if it gets too much, we can help you get more comfortable. Just push the button here…” she hands me the call button, “… and I or another nurse will come on in and help you. Everyone on the ward knows about your situation. So don’t worry, there won’t be any problems medication-wise.”

I relax a little further and breathe easier. “Thank you for taking care of me.”

“It’s my job.”

“I feel like you’re putting a little extra effort into me,” I tell her honestly, though my muscles are beginning to cramp, the pain increasing and becoming more intolerable.

She grins, fluffing my pillows behind me. “You’re an interesting case. Plus, I don’t want to be on the bad side of Defiance MC if you know what I mean?”

I snort out a laugh, the movement making my back shoot in pain, and I follow it with a groan. “Shit,” I murmur.

“Sorry. Note to self… don’t make you laugh. I have to check on my other patients, but if you need me…” I hold up the button, and she nods her head. “Exactly. I’ll come see you before I leave for the night. Shall I send in someone from your people outside? They’ve been desperate for you to wake.”

“Yeah… thanks.” I weakly smile through the pain.

Charlotte tilts her head, then turns, walking out of my room. Hurricane is already waiting at the door as she exits. “Take it easy with him, don’t make his heart rate spike. His lungs are still recovering, and he needs his oxygen levels to stay even,” she warns my president, not giving a fuck who he is.

“Yes, ma’am,” he replies as he walks into my room and over to me. “You gave us quite the scare, you fucker.”

I smirk, my body feeling like it’s now on fire. “No one else got hurt?” I ask through gritted teeth.

“Not yet. We’re all good, but the Bratva won’t be. I haven’t worked out the details, we just wanna make sure you get home safe first, but we gotta find a way to make Anton pay for this shit. Problem is… the bastard knows we’ll be gunnin’ for him. So he’ll be prepared.”

My muscles ache in the worst possible way, but all I want to do is get out of this bed and find a way to fight this fight.

To take on this fucker.

I want some one-on-one time with him.
