But I know I’m down for the count.

There’s nothing I can do to help.

“I don’t know how long I’m gonna be out of action, Pres. So if you guys need to take care of business without me, you do it. You fuckingtake… them… down.”

Hurricane rubs at his beard and lets out a huff. “We’ll hold off as long as possible, but I’ll keep you informed. The second we get the opportunity, we’ll take it. And just so you know, Maxxy wanted to join the fight for you.”

Scrunching my brows together, I frown. “The fuck do you mean?”

“I mean, she wanted to take up arms and go to war with Anton herself. She fucking means business too. Woman’s been camped outside your room since you got here.”

Scrubbing at my face, I let out a heavy exhale. “Don’t let her do that.”

Hurricane chuckles. “I won’t, brother. Don’t worry. I already told her she’s gotta stay here and take care of you. I don’t want her in this fight any more than you do.”

Sweat beads along my brow from the pain. I try to shift in the bed to make myself more comfortable, but no position is helping.

Hurricane sighs. “There anythin’ I can do?”

“Don’t waste your time here with me. Leave a guard at the door, and the rest of you head back to the club to figure out the next move. I want Anton and the Bratva to fucking pay. Sitting in the hospital is wasting valuable payback time.”

“You sure?”

“Pres, if you and the club don’t leave the hospital, I’m gonna get Charlotte, the nurse, back in here and tell her to call security to forcibly remove y’all.”

“You’re a pain in my ass…” Hurricane chuckles, folding his arms over his chest. “But, I get it. We’ll figure somethin’ out for you, brother. We’ll come up with a plan, then fill you in. In the meantime, you rest up. I’ll leave Grudge here to watch your six.”

“Thanks, man… now, get the fuck outta here.”

Hurricane squeezes my shoulder. “You take care. You need meds, you take ’em.”

I won’t.

“Yeah, yeah. Go on, fuck off outta here. Figure a way to get back at that asshole.”

Hurricane nods and turns for the door. “Fuckin’ glad you’re okay, brother.”

I don’t have it in me to tell him that my body is screaming in agony. So I smile as best I can, and as soon as he leaves the room, I let out the breath I was holding and begin panting, trying to fight the spasms in my muscles. “Motherfucker,” I mumble to myself as I writhe in bed.

“Hoodoo?” a familiar voice chimes as she rushes from the hall to my bedside.

I want to fake it.

I want to pretend like the cramps aren’t agony.

But I can’t stop them as I curl up into a ball on the bed.

“Oh God, what can I do to help? Should I get the nurse?” Maxxy asks, reaching for the buzzer.

But my hand snaps out, grabbing her wrist and stopping her while I pant through the pain. “No!” I grunt.

Maxxy doesn’t try to take her hand from my grip, and I can’t help it as I clamp down on her wrist, needing to hold onto something. “I’m right here, Hoodoo. I’m not going anywhere.” That beautiful voice somehow soothes me as her other hand slides out, gently caressing my side.

The pain feels like it’s ripping through me, tearing my muscles apart. My back is on fire, and I can’t seem to relieve it, no matter what position I move into. My breathing is rushing in and out, the machines starting to beep on and off.

“Hoodoo, you need to either try and calm down, or I’m gonna get you some meds to help with the spasms.”

“Maxxy… just stop. I won’t… take… anything,” I mumble through my breaths.
