Maxxy’s eyes begin to water as she moves her free hand to my chin, pulling me to look at her. “Listen here… I know you’re strong, but you’re notthisstrong. Justtakethedamn meds,Hoodoo.”

I yank my face free from her grip and shove her wrist away from me. “Get the fuck out!”

Her eyes widen in shock. “Wh... what?”

“Get out, Maxxy! I don’t need you here.”

“Hoodoo—”

“Get out!”I scream at her.

Maxxy’s bottom lip trembles as she takes a step back. “Just so you know, I was the one who told them not to give you opioids,” she replies just above a whisper, then she turns, rushing out of the room.

Grimacing and feeling like an asshole, I want to call her back, but another spasm hits so intense that I let out an animalistic groan while my entire body goes fucking rigid.

All I want is a hit.

Something to take the edge off.

I’d fucking kill for some morphine right now.

But I can’t.

I can’t go back to that place.

So I have to grit and bare it.

As another spasm hits my muscles, causing the nerve pain in my back to ignite, and a cold sweat washes over me so intense my entire body shudders. Nausea rolls over me as the room begins to spin. My breathing labors, and everything begins to fade.

The pain is just too much.

The room spins.

Lights flash behind my eyes.

Everything goes fuzzy.

And then, before I know it…

… everything turns black.

Five Days Later

New Year’s Eve

My eyes burst open wide at the sounds of explosions.

I reach for my gun as I jerk on the bed and realize I’m still in the hospital, and I definitely don’t have my gun with me. Glancing through the window, fireworks bombard the night sky, and that’s when I take in some much-needed calming breaths.

Blinking rapidly, I feel disorientated. I clear my throat—it’s dry—and I reach over, grabbing the glass of water and taking a sip through the straw. I know I’ve been asleep for ages, but I must admit, my muscles feel less tense than they were as I stretch them out. Reaching for my cell—plugged into the charger on the set of drawers next to me—I yank out the cord and bring it over so I can see what day it is. Glancing at the time, 12:04 a.m. I check the date, January 1. My eyes widen as I rub the back of my neck.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. It’s New Year’s?” I mumble to myself.

A head pops around my door, and I glance at Grudge’s smiling face. “Fuck, brother, you’re awake? Happy New Year! How ya feeling?” he asks, walking through the door to my bed, where he lightly grips my shoulder.

“Disorientated… didn’t I come in here on Christmas?”

Grudge sighs. “Yeah… about that, Dr. Adams said your body shut down because you wouldn’t accept any pain meds or any kind of sedative to help with the spasms. So while the toxins were working their way out of your system, your body kept you asleep to fight through the pain because it was simply too much for you.”
