“I was poisoned! I didn’t have a heart attack, Max—”

“And let’s not tempt fate by giving you all the grease togiveyou a damn heart attack, Hoodoo.”

Hoodoo groans as we reach the car. “Fuck. You’re worse than my mother.”

Grudge hands me my cell, then continues to his bike without saying a word.

“And you’re as whiny as a six-year-old. Get in the damn car,” I snap, unlocking my vehicle and throwing his bag in the back seat.

He opens the passenger door and slides in. “Surprised you’re not gonna buckle up my belt for me.”

“I’ll fucking leave you here in a minute if you don’t shut the fuck up,” I state, moving into the driver’s seat and putting the keys into the ignition.

Hoodoo closes his door and pulls on his belt, turning and staring at me.

I let out a huff and groan. “What?” I grumble, glaring at him.

He reaches out, placing his hand on my knee, a warm smile lighting his face. “Thank you… for looking after me. I know I’m a handful.”

Warmth floods through me, and I relax my shoulders a little. “I can handle you, Hoodoo… you’re not getting rid of me that easily.”

Our eyes connect, and his bright green orbs stare into mine. A moment passes between us. There’s always been a surge of something there, but right here, in this moment, something is happening that I can’t quite put my finger on. My breathing quickens, and my knee tingles where his hand holds it. It’s like a rush of energy surges from his body into mine. I couldn’t have ever imagined my body reacting this way to him. But here I am, feeling so energized and alive from simply looking at him, by just being near him. By being so fucking happy he is here, with me, and that he made it through.

I swallow hard as his hand moves from my knee to my face. The gesture instantly causes my breathing to hitch. His thumb gently strokes my cheek as we stare at each other.

“Maxxy… I—”

Suddenly, my cell starts ringing, causing me to jump out of my skin, completely derailing the moment. It’s such a shock I almost drop the damn thing onto the floor of the car.

Hoodoo smirks, dropping his hand from my cheek, and sits back in his seat, glancing out his window as I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

Fuck. Me!

“You gonna answer that?” Hoodoo chuckles.

“Fuck! Yeah. Shit!” I flap about, trying to get a good grip on my falling phone. I bring it up and look at the screen to see Hurricane’s number flashing.

Great timing, asshole.

I swipe the screen and put it on speaker. “Pres, I have Hoodoo, and we’re in the car about to return to the clubhouse. Grudge is gonna tail us home.”

“Good to hear. How’s he feelin’?”

I glance over at Hoodoo, and he grins at me but doesn’t answer. “He’s his usual argumentative self.”

Hurricane chuckles down the line. “Glad to hear the poison didn’t alter his personality too much. See ya when you get here.”

“Won’t be long. Leaving now.”

“All right, we’ll be waitin’.” He ends the call, and I slide the cell into the center console.

I’m not sure what to say to Hoodoo after that moment we just shared, so I figure it’s best to say nothing at all. “Let’s get you home.”

He nods and slides his hand back on my knee.

My eyes widen, and I can’t help but smile as I start the car, reverse out of the parking space, and drive for the clubhouse with the unmistakable sound of a Harley following closely behind.
