She chuckles in agreement. “Oh yeah, these guys are just getting started with their celebrations.”

Hoodoo should be resting.

There’s no denying that.

But seeing him finally smiling and the happiness on his face after watching him writhing in pain in the hospital days ago…

Yeah, I’m going let him have this.

He can recover tomorrow.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Hoodoo

The Next Day

My back hurts, and I roll in bed feeling uncomfortable as I let out a small groan. “Motherfucker!” I grimace as I open my eyes, realizing I partied a little too hard last night.

I didn’t drink or go overboard—I probably just stood for too long and let my muscles get stiff. I have to remember my body has been through a lot.

Letting out a long breath, I move to sit up, and as I do, a shadow in the corner of my room makes me jerk back. I go to reach for my gun when a whimsical chuckle causes me to stop and slump my shoulders.

“Feeling your age this morning, old man?” Maxxy chimes.

Yep, it’s official. I want to hurtle something at her.

Hard.

I flop back onto the bed, my forearm resting over my eyes as I groan. “Your stalker tendencies have reached a new level.”

The sound of her footsteps approaching the bed doesn’t go unnoticed, but I don’t move my arm from over my eyes. Then the bed dips as she sits on the edge.“Are you in pain?”

“My ears are, from your incessant nagging,” I grumble.

She places her hand on my leg, and warmth radiates right through me. “Hoodoo, I’m being serious. Is there anything I can do for you?”

Dammit!

It’s easier when we’re needling each other.

When she’s being nice, it makes me feel things, and I don’t know how to handle those damn feelings burning inside me.

Dropping my arm from my face, I look up at her and sigh. “I’m okay, just a little sore. I’ve been through worse… much, much worse.”

A sad look crosses her face, and she nods. “I know… I saw it all.”

Our eyes lock, and a moment of mutual understanding crosses between us as silence falls over the room.

Maxxy sniffles, then looks away from me, almost like the emotion is becoming too much. “Do you want me to get you something to eat? I can bring it to your room, so you don’t have to get out of bed?” She goes to stand, and I reach out, grabbing her wrist, halting her. She stops and turns back to look at me, her eyes staring into mine.

My chest rises and falls with the tension of the moment. “Max… are we going to talk about this?” I ask, meaning the chemistry between us.

She swallows hard, her face turning pale as she tenses. “What’s there to talk about?” she replies, and it’s like a damn jackhammer to my chest.

I let out a heavy breath and nod, slowly letting go of her wrist. “Right… yeah, you’re right. I’ll, ah… stay in here. But you go get yourself some breakfast.”

Her brows furrow like she’s confused by what just happened, and she stands slowly, gnawing on her bottom lip. “You sure?”
