Grit smiles, and he nods. “Good! That makes it easier to do this,” he says, sliding his hand into his pocket, pulling out a box, then dropping to one knee.

We all gawk as Lani gasps, her hands rushing to her mouth as she bursts into tears.

Kaia clings to Hurricane as she gently cries for her sister.

“Leilani Mahoe, you are the reason behind my laughter and the cause of my smiles. You’re the light in my day and the stars in my night. I can’t imagine a world where you’re not by my side, with me, enjoyingevery ride… as my wife.”

Lani sobs, crying harder as Grit opens the box, revealing a ring. Though I can’t see it from here, her eyes light up, so I know it must be nice.

“Lani… be not just my Old Lady, but my partner, my ride or die, my wife… marry me?”

Her bottom lip shakes so much I can’t help but wonder if all this emotion will trigger a seizure. Her hands tremble, and she’s not responding, just staring off into space.

As he stands, Grit notices it too. His hands slide to her face, his eyes meet hers, and he acts quickly. “Lani? Lani, baby, stay with me. Focus. Control your breathing,” he urges, gently stroking her face but holding around her waist in case she goes down.

He leans in, gently pressing his lips to hers. It’s not a passionate kiss, just enough to shock her. Her lids begin to blink, and he pulls back, still keeping his hold on her as he looks into her glassy eyes. “You with me?” he asks.

She gently nods. “Y… yeah. What happened?”

He smiles, still caressing her face. “You zoned out… a mild petit mal seizure. You feeling okay?” he asks.

Everyone lets out a collective sigh, knowing it’s not a normal seizure, just a very small one as she comes to.

Lani grimaces. “God, I’m so sorry. I’ve ruined your proposal.”

Grit presses his lips to her again, trying to comfort her, then pulls back. “The only way you could ruin the proposal, baby, is if you said no.”

Her eyes widen, and she slides her arms up around his neck, a bright smile lighting her face. “I could never say no to you.”

Grit tenses all over. “So… that’s a yes?”

She giggles as he pulls her body flush with his. “That’s a yes!”

He slams his lips to hers as we all send a round of cheering around the clubhouse. Grit lifts Lani and swirls her around as they kiss more passionately this time.

Hurricane and Kaia celebrate the loudest of us all.

Maxxy turns to me, chuckling, and rolls her shoulders. “I guess we know what Grit and Hurricane were talking about now?”

I furrow my brow. “That we do?” The statement comes out like a question.

She nods. “Grit was obviously asking Hurricane’s permission to ask Lani to marry him.”

Widening my eyes, that would explain why he looked like he was going to be sick. Poor guy. So glad it all worked out, though. Looks like we have a couple of weddings coming up in the club. “Yeah… that makes sense.”

Maxxy reaches out, taking my hand. I look down at our joined hands as she tilts her head for the hall. “Hey, can I talk to you for a second…alone?”

The rest of the clubhouse is in full celebration mode, and I guess I need to talk to Maxxy if I’m going to listen to what City and Omen were saying at breakfast this morning.

Our hands are still joined as we stand, and I lead her toward my bedroom.

“Yeah, I think we do need to talk.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Hoodoo

Grit and Lani getting their happiness like that has lit something inside me.
