Kaia beams from ear to ear as Grudge hands her the next lei. She repeats the process, placing the lei over Hurricane’s head and leans in to kiss his cheeks.

Lani steps up with another lei covered in orchids, and Hurricane smiles so wide as he moves over to Kailani, dipping his chin at her. “I’m gonna take good care of your daughter. I promise you.”

Kailani grips his wrist, smiling at him. “You already have. You’ve given her a beautiful daughter and a happy life here, Lynx. I couldn’t ask for a better son-in-law.”

Hurricane beams with happiness and places the orchid lei over his new mother-in-law’s head, and she leans in, kissing his bearded cheek tenderly. She steps back, making way for Ingrid to move up into position. Kaia takes the last orchid lei and takes a deep breath, smiling so wide at Ingrid with tears glistening in her eyes. “Ingrid, you’ve been a huge part of all our lives. I’m so happy to be welcoming you into mine.”

Ingrid wipes a tear from her cheek as Kaia places the lei over her neck. “I adore you, Kaia, and if anyone was going to tame that big goof, it was you. Thank you for making our family and Hurricane whole.”

Kaia leans in, kissing Ingrid on the cheek, and everyone moves back as Hurricane and Kaia turn to face each other. They hold hands, smiling so happily. It’s as if they get lost, like the rest of us disappear, and they only have eyes for each other. It’s nice to see, but Grudge clears his throat, interrupting their moment.

Everyone laughs, and Hurricane raises his hand. “There’s just one thing I have to do first now that the formalities are out of the way.”

Kaia frowns, as do we all, wondering what the fuck he’s talking about, but he rushes forward, grabbing Kaia by her waist, pulling her to him, and he kisses the fuck out of her. We all chuckle as they kiss passionately, probably a little too passionately for us to bear witness to. Kailani’s cheeks turn red, and she spins away from watching her daughter be basically dry-humped in front of everyone.

“Ahem… sorry, Pres, but we do have guests here,” Grudge announces, trying to break them up.

“It’s no wonder they had a kid first. I know what that’s like!” Trax calls out, and everyone laughs as they finally break apart, panting for breath.

Kaia turns, a flush crossing her cheeks as she touches her lips like she forgot she was in public. “Sorry, guys. It’s the emotions of it all. Please… continue, Grudge.”

She goes to take a step back from Hurricane, but he wraps his arms around her, holding his body to hers. He’s not letting her go no matter what.

I can’t help but smile.

Maxxy leans in closer to me. I slide my arm around her shoulders, pulling her to my side, and she leans in against my ear. “Hurricane is being a mushy teddy bear,” she whispers.

I smirk. “I guess all guys can be when they’re in love.”

Maxxy glances at me, biting that bottom lip that makes me instantly hard, but she doesn’t say anything as the wedding continues.

Today is a good day, and just being here and sharing this moment with Maxxy makes me feel things. I press my lips tenderly to Maxxy’s temple, and I can’t help but wonder, have I been wasting the last six years hanging onto the hope of a ghost? Have I been clinging to the thought that maybe ‘G’ and I would eventuate when I could have spent years with Maxxy instead?

What I do know is that ‘G’ means a lot to me, and I have been neglecting her.

I haven’t written for a while.

I need to tell ‘G’ about Maxxy—and I need to tell Maxxy about ‘G.’

And I don’t know how either one of them will react.

But now is not the time to be focused on my dilemmas.

Right now, I need to focus on my president and the way he is sliding that ring on Kaia’s finger.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Hoodoo

The wedding was great, and Kaia and Hurricane seemed to be floating on cloud nine. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look so content and relaxed. It’s a good look for him.

It’s pretty damn good having everyone here, mingling and getting along.

The alcohol is flowing, Lani and Frankie have cooked us an amazing feast, and this has turned into a really wonderful celebration. I sit back, my belly full from the kalua pig that I finally got to eat. We missed out at Christmas due to the drone attack, but luckily, I’ve had my fill this evening. I wish I could pop the button on my jeans and let my belly out, but there are far too many people here for that little display. Plus, I am not overly keen on Maxxy witnessing that, although I know she would find it funny at this point in our relationship.

Maxxy smirks at me as if she can sense I’m thinking about her. She goes to say something as a ring tapping on a beer bottle has us all turning to face Hurricane.

“I know all the formal shit is out of the way, but I just wanna say, on behalf of myself and my wife...” He smiles so wide as he says the last part and glances down at Kaia. “We wanna thank all you fuckers for bein’ a part of this day with us. Y’all mean something to us. Defiance is family, whether you’re a brother from another chapter,” he glances across to where the Chicago, Houston, and LA brothers are all sitting and nods his head at them, and they each raise their beers to him, “… an ally…” he shifts his gaze to where Marcel, the Baroness, and their men are standing by the bar, and they each dip their heads in acknowledgment, “… or actual family,” he states, turning to look at Bayou and Novah, Lani and Grit, even Nash and Brianna. Then his new mother-in-law, Kailani, who’s sitting with the only mother that has looked out for him all his life, Ingrid.
