She crawled into bed, into my arms, and cuddled into my chest.

My hold on her tightened as if I was afraid if I let go, she would take off.

“I’m not scared anymore,” she said.

“What changed?”

“Do you want the cordial answer or the truth?”

“The truth. Always.”

“Yesterday, when I thought I was dying on that trail, all I could think about was how I needed you. Not water or food, just you. And maybe I’m selfish because of it, but I don’t want to live another second without you. However long I have on this earth, I want you with me.”

I flipped her beneath me, brushing her blonde strands off her face. “Good, because I wasn’t letting you walk away again.”

“Oh really? What were you planning on doing? Handcuffing me to your bed?”

My eyebrow arched. “Can’t believe I didn’t think about that, but now that I have, that picture is never leaving my thoughts.”

She poked my sides, and I pinned her hands over her head. “There’s only one thing left.”

“What’s that?”

I reached over to my nightstand and pulled out the box that had been sitting there for weeks. I popped the black top to reveal my grandmother’s ring. “Marry me.”

She gasped, her eyes darting from mine to the ring.

“I told you I’d get you a ring. It’s my grandmother’s. Before my grandfather died, he told me to give it to the love of my life, as he had. He promised a lifetime of happiness.”

Tears streamed down Phoebe's face, and I kissed them away. She laughed. “A lifetime of happiness. Are you suggesting a new pact?”

My lip twitched and pulled into a smile. “Agree to marry me, and I promise to love you forever.”

She lifted and kissed me. “Deal.”

After another round of sex and staying in bed way longer than we should have, Laurent drove me home. He insisted on walking me to my room even though, after all the sex we had, it was obvious I was back to myself. He didn’t care, and it was one of the many things I loved about him. He was my protector.

He used the keycard to open my door and pushed it open. “Thank you,” I said.

“Phoebe!” Parker’s voice echoed out into the hallway. “I was so worried! Lewis told me what happened, and you weren’t answering your phone.”

I glanced at my bag where my dead phone was. “My battery died after I called him. I’m sorry. I should have had Laurent call you.”

“No, it’s okay. He was busy taking care of you. Are you okay? How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine. Feeling a little silly, but other than that, I’m good.”

Parker threw her arms around me, tugging me close to her chest. “I’m so happy.”

“How are you doing?” I asked.

“Me? Fine. Why wouldn’t I be fine?”

“Considering when your mom couldn’t get a hold of me yesterday, she ripped Laurent a new one.”

“Oh, that… She’s still angry. I’m actually surprised she hasn’t shown up here yet.”

“She won’t,” I said.
