‘Yeah, you and me both,’ Stacey said as the boss and Bryant walked in the room.

SIXTY-NINE

Kim headed back down the stairs with an excitement building in her stomach. She was on the cusp of solving two mysteries and one or both included murder. She had updated Woody and advised him to keep the ground-penetrating radar team on standby. She was hoping to have something imminently.

Penn was now on his way to bring Monty Dunhill in for questioning, and she’d given Josh a drink, a sandwich and some time to think of what he wanted to say. He wasn’t under arrest. He could leave at any time. Right now, all she had on him was lying, so she had to play this right.

And that was why she was questioning him alone.

‘Everything okay?’ she asked, closing the door behind her.

The sandwich was gone and the cup was half empty.

‘Where exactly were you going?’ she asked, nodding towards the holdall at his feet.

He shrugged. ‘I dunno. I just didn’t want to be there when you came back.’

‘You were sure I would?’

‘Oh yeah, your face said you weren’t done with me.’

‘Did that make you nervous?’

He thought before nodding. ‘I suppose I’ve been waiting for someone like you for the last ten years.’

‘Is that why you’ve not really moved on with your life? No steady job? No girlfriend?’

‘Maybe. I mean I’m not proud of lying, but I didn’t know what else to do.’

His first admission that he’d actually lied.

‘Did you have an argument?’ she asked.

His face changed. The worried frown hardened. ‘Is that what you think?’

‘Could have happened.’

His brain seemed to be working overtime and she could see regret in his face, either for his actions ten years ago or for agreeing to talk to her, but she couldn’t be sure which.

‘I think I want a lawyer,’ he said, nodding in affirmation to both her and himself.

‘Why the change?’ she asked, confused.

‘I need to know how much trouble I’m in before I tell you anything.’

‘I thought you wanted to come clean, unburden yourself?’

‘I do, but once I say the words, I can’t take ’em back. I need legal advice.’

‘Josh, did you hurt Brad?’ she asked.

She wasn’t bound by procedure because he wasn’t under arrest. Once cautioned, she would be unable to ask anything once he requested legal services, but right now she could ask him whatever she wanted. He was free to give her the finger and leave.

‘Did you make a pass at him?’
