“I don’t know.”

“Did you meet her parents?” Archie asked.

I nodded. “I did.”

“Are they nice?” he asked.

I smiled. “They’re… well, they’re her parents.”

Victoria burst into laughter. “That was very diplomatic. You already sound like a king.”

“Would you be a king?” Archie asked.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t really gotten into the details.”

“Do you want to be the king?” Edmund asked.

“It’s not like I would be ruling,” I said. “She’s the queen. I’m just the guy on her arm, which is right where I want to be. I don’t want to be a ruler. I just want to enjoy life.”

As we continued our conversation, my mind kept drifting back to the whales we saw in Norway. The way they moved through the water with such grace and power was mesmerizing. I hoped I got the chance to go back. I wanted to see the look on her face as she watched them.

“Alright, guys, I need to go shower and unpack before dinner,” I said. “I’ll see you later.”

Heading back to the main house, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the love and support of my family. They were my confidants and my best friends. I knew people didn’t always understand our relationship, but I cherished the moments we spent together.

Emilie had made me realize how lucky I was to have the family I did. I gathered she was close to her sister. I couldn’t imagine how I would feel if Victoria or any of the others ran off in the middle of the night. I would be pissed, but more importantly I would be crushed to lose one of my siblings because duty got in the way.

Without them, I would be lost. Each of them brought something different to the table. I wanted to believe I was just as important to them. Our parents made sure we all understood we were a family. Family was the most important thing in the world, and it always would be.

I needed their full support to get through the rest of Wed season. I hoped it was better than the first session, but part of me worried Emilie would be back to her old self after being home with her parents. They were going to change her back into that cold young woman I met at the masquerade ball.

But I couldn’t let that happen. I was determined to keep Emilie by my side, no matter what. As I entered my room, I thought about the promises I made to her in Norway. I promised to protect her, to love her, and to give her everything she ever wanted. I was willing to do anything to keep my promise.

I started to unpack my bags, but my thoughts kept drifting to Emilie. I missed her already. I wanted to be with her, to hold her in my arms, to kiss her. As I finished unpacking, I heard a knock on my door.

“Come in,” I said.

To my surprise, it was Victoria who walked in. She had a serious expression on her face as she closed the door behind her.

“So,” she said. “Tell me what really happened.”

“What do you mean?”

“Did you guys get to spend time together—and you know what I mean,” she said with a grin.

“We did,” I said, nodding.

“Was it a good time?”

“Victoria, stop,” I said. “This is not something I’m talking to you about.”

“Are you good with the situation now?”

I knew my sister. She was going to keep prying. “The situation is much better than it was,” I said. “I think Emilie is more open to the idea of a marriage that involves love.”

“Of course, she would be,” she said, laughing. “It’s you. Any woman would be lucky to have you. I think she realized what you had to offer.”

I smiled, feeling grateful for Victoria’s support. “I hope so. I just want her to be happy.”
