“Hi, Clara.” Emilie gave the young lady a hug. “You look beautiful. I love your dress!”

The young woman looked at me and blushed. I nodded politely.

“Theo, this is Clara,” Emilie said.

“It’s nice to meet you, Clara.” I kissed the back of her hand.

“Can I borrow you for a minute?” Clara asked quietly, looking a little nervous.

I had sisters. I knew the code. There was some big drama that required some girl time.

When Emilie looked at me, I smiled. “Go.”

“I’ll be back soon.”

I walked to the drink table to get something a little more substantial. I sidestepped the dance floor to avoid getting caught up in a lady’s fluffy dresses.

As I approached the table, I was pleasantly surprised to see Charles once again. He extended his hand with a friendly smile, and I reciprocated with a firm handshake.

“Charles, how’s everything going for you tonight?” I inquired, genuinely interested. “Are you working on that goal?”

“Goal?”

“The twenty-seven kids,” I joked.

He grinned. “That would be a scandal. A pregnant bride would definitely leave a mark on the season.”

“But you wouldn’t be the first,” I said, laughing.

“True.”

“So, things are going well?”

He took a sip of his drink. “Surprisingly better than I expected, Theo. I suppose I’m slowly getting used to all the pomp and circumstance.”

I chuckled in agreement. “I know what you mean. It can be a little much at times.”

Charles nodded. “Are you and Emilie planning to attend the horse races tomorrow?”

I couldn’t help but smile at the mention of the horse races. “Of course. We wouldn’t miss it. It promises to be an exciting event.”

He grinned, clearly pleased with my response. “Well, that’s good to hear. I’ll definitely be there as well. Maybe we can catch up and enjoy the races together.”

“That sounds like a good idea.”

“Have you heard about Matthew?”

I groaned and shook my head. “No. What did he do now?”

His gaze went to where Emilie and Clara were happily talking to a couple of other women. “That’s his match. He was overheard calling her a cow.”

“Clara?” I asked.

“I would say the one in white, but I don’t know if that would help,” he joked.

All of the ladies were in white with all of the men in black to match the theme of the party.

“Forgive my rudeness, but the one that’s a little, uh, curvier, than the others,” he said.
