Rueben was alone in their squad car, looking incredibly handsome in his uniform, as always.

“She just went to grab us some lunch. I wanted to surprise her with something nice, because she’s still preoccupied by that package she got.”

At the mention of the blackmail Adam’s stomach knotted with worry. “Did something else happen?”

“No! No, sorry. But we haven’t been able to trace anything concrete on it either and she’s worried about it.”

“I’ll help you distract her tonight, Daddy.”

Rueben smiled at him again, this time winking before responding. “I was counting on it. Now be a good boy. Go make some money and have a decent lunch. Miss you, naughty boy.”

He blew him a kiss, and Adam quickly responded with his own before cutting the call.

Damn. He had it bad didn’t he?

Chapter 20

Alisha had made Rueben stop at the big fancy grocery store after work. He wanted to rope her into making them dinner, so he got to pay for the good stuff.

Not that she minded making a meal for the two men she’d fallen in love with. And yes, she did love them. She was just waiting for the right time to tell them.

By the time they had arrived at Rueben’s house, Adam was already waiting for them outside. He had a backpack slung over his shoulder, and his nonchalant stance against the side of his car made him look sinfully sexy.

“Hey, little miss. You look delightfully tempting in that uniform. Want to come here so I can dirty you up a bit?”

Alisha laughed and ran to him, throwing herself into his arms as he stepped away from his car. When she had her arms wrapped around his neck, he twirled her around in circles, making her laugh with abandon.

“I missed you too,” Adam said, his voice filled with amused adoration. “Let’s not wait this long to see each other again, yeah?”

“I couldn’t agree more.” This was from Rueben. He’d stepped up behind them and planted a soft kiss on the top of his head. “I’d rather see you daily, even if it’s only an hour before bed.”

“That sounds like the best idea ever,” Alisha said. She looked between Adam and Rueben. “Like the best. I think you should just stay here with Rueben. That way, you’re always around. His internet is pretty decent. You can work from here, can’t you?”

Adam’s eyes grew huge, and Alisha knew she’d pushed too much too soon. “Or maybe we make a rule that says we have to have a midweek sleepover at least.”

Rueben must have noticed Adam’s expression, too, because he wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her in his arms bridal style, effectively cutting her ramblings short.

“I concur, my sweet girl. I hereby declare, every Wednesday, sleepover night.”

Alisha couldn’t bring herself to look at Adam. She was worried about what her pushing might have caused and decided just to let Rueben take charge. He would fix it. He was good at that.

Rueben juggled her while holding his house keys, unlocking the door and carrying her into the house. When he put her down in the kitchen, he kissed her forehead before whispering to her. “One step at a time, sweet girl. He’ll be ours soon enough. I bet even sooner than you think.” Then he walked out to the car to fetch the bags of provisions Alisha had made him buy.

Adam walked in after her Daddy left and stepped up closer to her.

“It’s not that I don’t want to, Alisha.” He looked down at his feet while he talked, shuffling them around. “I want my happily ever after with you and Rueben more than I’d realized. But I don’t want to rush it and end up breaking it.”

“I know, Addy. I promise,” she whispered, stepping into his embrace. She looked up at him, a soft smile on her face. “I am constantly terrified that something I do will push you or Rueben away. I’ll be too little. Too needy. Something. So I guess that has me rushing along headfirst, trying to force things that aren’t ready yet.”

“The problem, little miss, isn’t that I’m not ready. It’s that I’m too ready. And that scares me.”

“Then we can be scared together,” Alisha said before standing on her toes to meet his lips.

“That looks good. Can I get in on that?” Rueben asked from the kitchen door.

“Always.” Alisha smiled at Rueben and held her hand out to him. When he wrapped them both in his arms, and pulled them against his chest, the ick in Alisha’s chest settled.

They could wait as long as they needed to. There was no rush. They had forever to figure things out. Forever with her two men.
