“I’m going to guess from the adorable blush creeping up your neck that you’re interested in him too.”

“Uh... yeah. Quite a bit.”

Rueben frowned again and before Alisha could ask him what was wrong, he explained.

“I guess I need to ask you something else before we carry on with the Adam discussion.” His tone was very serious, and he sounded more than a little stressed.

“Yeah?”

“Now that you know I am interested in you, how does that make you feel?”

Huh. Guess she wasn’t the only one who had some insecurities. Alisha pushed down her own fears and nerves. This was important. “You’re a very attractive man, Rueben.” He continued to frown at her, obviously not satisfied. “If I’m being honest, I’d never entertained the thought of a relationship with you. First, because I had no clue you were interested, and secondly, because of the whole partner thing. I wouldn’t allow myself to go down that road. But now that you’ve opened the door, I can tell you I’m not opposed to it at all.

“You’re a great cop. You’re patient, conscientious and capable. Not to mention you’re unreasonably sexy. Like seriously.” Alisha shrugged at this when Rueben’s frown gave way to a surprised look.

“Oh.”

She smiled at his one-word response, pleased with the reaction she’d gotten from him. “So, yeah. Knowing you’re interested in me makes me all kinds of excited and has some butterflies flying around.”

He smiled at her. A beautiful, blinding smile that was the best kind of reward a girl could ask for.

“So. Adam.”

Alisha smiled back before nodding. “Yes, Adam.”

Chapter 6

“Come on, Adam,” Sadie whispered to him. “You know you wanna.”

Adam rolled his eyes at his long-time friend before shushing her and making notes on what the guest lecturer was saying in front.

“The sun is shining. The ground is nice and muddy. It would besomuch fun.”

“Sadie, I’m in here as a punishment. I’m not quite ready to earn another one on top of this one. Now quiet and pay attention.”

Someone in the front cleared their throat making both him and Sadie turn their attention back where it was required.

“Do either of you have something to add?” the matronly woman asked them. Dammit, Adam couldn’t remember her name and didn’t want to get into even more trouble.

“No, Ma’am. I’m sorry. We’re listening now,” Adam said before turning to Sadie. “Aren’t we?”

She rolled her eyes at him before sitting back in her chair and crossing her arms in front of her.

Once the droning continued on and everyone was focused on the front of the class again, Adam sat back in his own chair before scribbling down a note.

We can go after this.

This earned him a smile and even had the result of having Sadie actually listen to the talk they were being given on proper protocols in a more traditional Dom/sub relationship. It was nothing either of them hadn’t learned before, but as two chronic rule breakers, it was something Adam had faced as punishment on more than a few occasions.

That and a tanned backside if he was very unlucky.

Adam loved it here. He loved the structure, the discipline, and the knowing that no matter what he got up to, he’d always be accepted and appreciated. The only problem was, even though he had so many wonderful friends here, he was still very much alone.

Not that his life outside the Ranch was any better.

After the class was done, Sadie and Adam agreed to meet once he’d changed into something that would weather the elements a bit better.

He ran into his room and skidded to a halt at the blinking light on his personal phone. It was too early for another phone call from his mom, and there were very few other people who had his personal number.
