“You really think so? She’s still just an omega.”

“Ask any alpha in that arena what they felt the moment she turned on them like that. It was a challenge most domestic alphas aren’t used to. Take Mayson, he’s no rogue—he’s a bank manager for Christ’s sake, staring down the barrel of thousands of years of evolution.”

“So… it was Harrison that fucked up?”

“I mean, I’m not saying I blame him, but it may well have ended better for both of them if he’d let her do what she climbed into that cage to—”

“Shut it off,” I snapped.

I couldn’t take it.

Drake glanced up at me from the phone, eyes hurt. “We should know. I mean… it’s kind of… I don’t know—”

“She almost died,” I ground out.

“Protecting him,” Ebony said quietly, gaze falling on Vex again, an intense look in his eyes. “Protectingourpack.”

There was a long silence. “Fine.” I swallowed. “Just turn it down.”

I was still coming down from the absolute terror of what had just happened. Never, in all my life, had I felt anything like I had the moment I saw Vex crouching over Rook’s body, looking out at two rutting alphas who were primed to murder her.

It wasn’t just her. There had been a moment, when we’d got to the hospital, that the doctors had been worried about him. He’d fought too many rounds… any longer…

I clenched my fists. I should have done more before this—should have noticed that he was getting this close to a rut. I wassupposedto be his best friend, and I hadn’t noticed. I’d been so angry. And now it was Ebony who’d been there, and she stopped him, not me. She’dclaimedhim.

They’d said that was good.

That should be good. Itwasgood, I was just…

You weren’t watching her.My nails dug into my palms. She got hurt while you were fighting with Ebony.

I felt like I was living a replay.

Fuck.

But what hadshebeen thinking? No one could have predicted that.

And it was televised.

I looked up, blood running cold. Would the pack who held her bond punish her for this?

“Have they texted?” I asked Ebony when Drake dipped out to find a vending machine.

He glanced up, frowning until he realised what I meant. Ebony tugged the second phone from his pocket, glancing at it, then shook his head. “Nothing. But it’s late. They might not find out until the morning.”

“They might have felt it through the bond.”

“Less gets through than you think. She’s strong. She keeps them out.”

There was a knock at the door, and I looked up, half prepped to see Rook’s parent pack—Ebony had warned me they were on the prowl—but instead I was met with a rather unexpected sight.

I crossed toward the door and pulled it open, heart in my throat. “Prey?”

And she’d brought… friends. Well, one familiar gold pack omega—the one with chestnut hair who we’d found with Vex at the Gala. At her side was an alpha—presumably hers. He was tall and slim, and saddled with a stack of boxes that smelled of sweet baking. The snow white of his shaggy hair and one red eye marked him as a seer—an alpha who could read auras. But he certainly didn’t look like he worked here—he wore a hoodie and had a scar up his left cheek.

“Hi…” Prey said, dragging my attention back to her. Her smile was a little anxious. “We heard about the situation. Thought we could stop by.”

“I…” Visitors for Vex? “Yes.”
