Ebony went rigid as I let them in, furious gaze fixed on Prey and the second alpha.

“Whatare you doing?” he asked.

But the omega was already shaking Drake’s hand, then mine, and Ebony’s—who nodded stiffly, eyes still on Prey—as she introduced herself as Havoc, and her alpha as Kai.

“This is good,” one of the nurses was saying, trailing them in, eyes on Vex. “Her heart rate is better. Does she know your scents? We usually find that reaction happens when an omega finds a person’s scent comforting.”

I felt Ebony bristle through the bond, and his eyes snapped to Prey like a lightning bolt.

“How is she?” Prey asked, eyes meeting mine. “Rook texted with an update.”

“He did?”

“Wanted any tips we could give on how he could get her to trust him.”

“For the record,” Havoc declared. “My suggestions were much more reasonable than climbing into cages with rutting alphas—but it was pretty cool. I’m glad they’re alright though.”

“Love—”

I crossed toward Ebony, stopping him before he began. “If they settle her, they stay.”

“You’re okay with an unbonded alpha soothing your omega while—”

“They were there for her when no one else was,” I said under my breath. “They’re good for her, and you’re going to be fucking grateful.”

“There for her?”Ebony demanded.

“Yes.”

I’d been able to piece together what they’d done in hindsight. From the fire in Prey’s eyes when she’d found me at the Gala, to all the truths that had come outside.

“She wasn’t just there for her, Ebony. Prey foundyouromegainheat, and she protected her and brought her back to you—to all of us. Of course Vex finds her comforting. Get a grip.”

Ebony’s jaw was still firmly clenched, but he did pause, eyes calculating as he glanced back over at Prey, who had taken a seat at Drake’s side.

I came out of the bathroom next, however, to hear the monitors in Rook’s room beeping.

“What the fuck is—?Ebony!” I snapped. He’d shoved Drake out of the way and was unceremoniously clambering into Vex’s bed. I pinched my brow with a sigh as he drew her against him and twilight grass filled the room as he scent marked her before I ripped him off and shoved him back into Rook’s doorway.

Havoc had laid out her gifts, which included three boxes of various waffles from Betabutter’s Waffle Truck, and then clambered onto the foot of Vex’s bed before pulling out some string.

“What’s her favourite colour?” she asked.

“Peach and sage,” Drake said instantly, shuffling his chair closer and watching. “What are you doing?”

“Friendship bracelet.” She lifted her arm to reveal three. “You get one, and then all your friends get charms to put on it. I had to get three. The first one is mostly my dad. Then my pack got me so many I needed another one. So then I got a third for friends only or they’d take up all the space.”

There was an awkward silence in the room, and then Havoc’s eyes brightened with realisation. “You don’t need that many friends. I only have Prey, so she just got me eight charms.” Another beat passed. “But I mean… if I got another friend, I could trade some out.” Havoc glanced to Prey nervously. “That would be okay, right?”

Prey nodded with a smile, and it was hard to ignore how she looked at Havoc with a warmth she’d once had for me.

I slumped down into the chair beside her and watched as Havoc and Kai were taking it in turns throwing chocolate raisins into each other’s mouths—to Drake’s entertainment.

“She’s a scent match?” Prey asked me quietly.

I nodded, jaw clenched.

“I’m sorry we were too late,” Prey said. “When we found her, I didn’t know someone had already been in.”
