Each moment in the cage had been cold and dark. I’d known my mate was in the world somewhere and didn’t want me.

That was true agony.

“The whole time you were here, I made you feel…” Like… that. Worse. And for so much longer. “I’ll spend the rest of my life fixing this.” Again, it took all my might not to drag her close. “I’m so,sosorry for everything, and I want to start making it up to you—when you’re ready. I didn’t mean for you to be there. I’m just… I’m sorry, and I—”

“What do you think you’re doing?” a sharp voice asked.

I looked over to see a woman in a white coat leaning against the doorway, arms folded. She was a female alpha, and had taken enough scent dampeners that I couldn’t catch her scent. Even her aura was faint in the air.

What did she think she was doing, interrupting this? “Who the fuck are you?”

“Henreka Davis, Arkologist on your case.”

“We’re kind of having a moment—”

“We’re seeing a spike in heart rate—”

“I’m fine!” I snapped.

“It’sherheart rate,” she said, eyes shifting to Vex.

I turned. “What?”

“Never in my life have I seen such a foolish display. She claimed you on live TV, Mr. Harrison. Why are you treating her so coldly?”

Claimed…me? My mind didn’t have time to consider that for her last words. I wasn’t beingcold. “I’mapologising.”

“You’re fighting your instincts. She’s reading it as rejection.”

“It’s okay!”Vex’s voice was breathy.

“I… What?” I looked back to Vex. She was still tense, eyes darting between us. “Y-you are?”

“I…” She shook her head. “No. No, of course not. It’s nice… what you’re saying. I didn’t want to—”

“I’m not rejecting you.”

“I know… I know you’re not.” But her voice went up a few octaves, a slight tremble in it.

“But—”

“Mr. Harrison!”

The moment I shifted to glance back at the Arkologist, Vex whined desperately, kicking her legs, her bottom lip quivering.

Okay.

Shit.

I gave intoeverything, staggering to my feet and dragging her against my chest.

She was different now, and I couldn’t put my finger on why. The whole world had shifted once more.

I was hers.

No matter what happened, I was hers. And that knowledge wasn’t weight down with shame this time. Instead, I was determined to be someone worth that.

I sunk onto the bed, drawing her head back gently so I could brush my jaw along hers.
