A scent mark.

I’d never done that before. Not to anyone.

Her purr was instant, and I felt arms wind around my neck as she clutched me against her.

My heart was warm.

Vexhad claimedme?

My own purr rumbled to life, matching hers as I held her tight.

That was a gift I would never let go.

TWENTY-NINE

LOVE

My face was still sore from where Rook had clocked me.

Fucking bastard.

I hadn’t beenhurtingher.

The nurse had given me a look that said,‘you have no one to blame but yourself.’

Vex, in full omega mode, spent the rest of the hospital stay curled up in Rook’s arms—with the exception of when I dragged him to the shower, (the reek of blood and sweat was getting a little much, and she deserved better than that). During that time, she dangled her legs over the edge of the bed, staring anxiously at the door until he returned.

Being in her arms was making Rook purr like a motorbike which was, admittedly, a little sweet. Plus, I could swear there was a glint of smugness in her expression as she worked around his death grip of a hug to adjust pillows around them both.

It settled my heart.

She was… happy.

That was what mattered.

“Can we go home?” she asked, the moment the Arkologist came back in to check on the two of them.

“He’s got a bit of a rut left in his system. He’ll need watching, but he’s good to leave. His wounds are healing quickly—that’s normal, especially in a rut, and yours weren’t too severe,” she finished.

“Okay, but…” I glanced between them. “You said the rut isalmostover. He’s not going to have to…” I trailed off.

“Is he going to have to stick his dick into anything before it’s over?” Ebony supplied the question for me.

Dr. Davis chuckled. “She’s doing a fine job of balancing him already.”

“She is?” Rook asked, confused. “But I mean… we haven’t…”

Dr. Davis rolled her eyes. “It’s always the elite packs who miss that memo. To be crude, your omega doesn’thaveto have sex with you to balance you through a rut—though, she’s welcome if that’s what you’d both prefer. Omegas well in tune with their instincts can settle an alpha without much more than skin on skin contact. We haven’t needed to give Mr. Harrison anything for his rut since he arrived.”

Vex puffed up at that, drawing Rook closer still.

“So… we can go home?” Drake asked.

“I’m going to prescribe them both another pain killer for lingering injuries. As long as you don’t separate them, let her take him to the nest, they’ll be fine.”

“Oh…” Rook looked weary. “No, no, I can’t go into her—” He cut off as Vex spun on him, eyes blazing. “I’m uh…” He shrank perceptibly. “I’m yours, Baby Girl… We can do what you want.”

Getting them home was a relief.
