I gasped for breath, clutching my throat.

“Stay,” Zeus growled as I tried to pick myself up. Then I felt something heavy on my throat.

His boot.

I clutched it, trying to free some of the pressure, half my mind on trying to fight the fear clogging my brain.

Ebony.

Ebony couldn’t come.

“I swear, you little gold pack rat. You let anything like that happen again, and I’ll make sure this meeting feels like a kindness. Now, tell me what happened.”

I tried to clear my mind. I’d seen this before, but I could survive this. I had something my mother never had. Something I had only claimed because of her.

“Love… Love bit me,” I stammered.

“Hebityou?”

“On… on your b-bite.”

What flooded through the bond from Zeus was more unsettling than anything else. Rage, like I expected, but that wasn’t all. With it I felt a vicious jealousy.

Claim.

And then with what must have been an almighty effort from him, the bond slammed shut. I was left with Cerus, a lingering sense of vile want and… I blinked, trying to find him in my vision.

I could feel his discomfort, and when I saw him, his gaze was on Zeus.

Zeus had a snarl on his face, clearly oblivious to his pack mate’s dissatisfaction. “Let’s solve both our problems in one. Ebony and Cerus.”

Finally, the weight was gone, though the command wasn’t. I couldn’t pick myself up, not yet.

“They’ve all bitten you at least once?”

I nodded. He knew the others had. It was part of the information he’d pried from me while we were together after the Gala. When he’d been taunting me over not being good enough for them.

“Good.” His voice and tone told me he thought it was anything but good. “Get on your knees, and beg Cerus for a bite right where Ebony gave you his.”

No.

Tears flooded my vision as I steadied myself on my knees before Cerus. I was desperately hugging my arms to my chest.

No.

The only bite I needed to tether me to this pack was from Zeus, but that didn’t stop the others from biting me, too. More points of connection for alphas I despised. Just like Havoc had never rid herself of the shadow of bites from her past, I would never be free of this one.

But that bite, the one Ebony had given me all that time ago on the roof beneath the sun.Itwas mine.

Love was my pack lead.

Ebony was my alpha.

I clung to that mantra.

Drake and Rook: they were mine.

Not Zeus, not Cerus. They’d had to force a dark bond to make that claim. A memory flashed in my vision. Ebony with burning silver eyes, taking my wrist and pressing his teeth to it.
