Drake.

“No matter how deep digs the thorn of the rose...”

Love.

“Or that words become lost as the wild winds blow.”

Rook.

“No matter the doubt, or how dark the shadow…”

Ebony.

I loved them.

I loved my mates, and they would save me.

FORTY-NINE

DRAKE

It was a twenty-five minute drive from our home.

Twenty-five minutes: That was all it took for me to be looking at a huge property that had been host to every nightmare I’d ever had.

The Lightning pack was inside, and this exchange—for my mate, for Vex—would be made on their terms.

The terms of a pack who had once tormented me.

We were in my van. It was almost three o’clock: the time they had set for the exchange.

The conversation around me was furious, though I could barely keep up. Leighton was on speakerphone and had been for the last half hour as we’d driven here.

“He’s almost into the security systems, but we’re running out of time, Love.”

“We can’t go in there without backup,” Love replied.

Right.

That’s what the text had said. No weapons. No phones. No backup.

Come alone, or you’ll never see her again.

“Youwillhave backup.” Leighton’s voice was cold through the phone.

There were kill orders on anyone taking a job at this location, that’s what Leighton had said. They’d planned this for far longer than we had to react to it, and had the money and resources to spread the word far and wide.

“No one who makes money in this business will touch it,” she went on. “I’ve called in every favour, Love, from your people and mine.”

“Ineedguarantees we aren’t all going to be shot the moment we step in there,” Love said.

“They’re afraid of the law,” Ebony put in. “We know that much. They’ve been too careful.”

“Until we’re in their systems, we don’t know how close we can get,” Leighton said. “I can’t risk tipping them off that we’re here.”

Dread slid through my veins, demanding we go. Vex was in thereright now. With them.

My nightmares.
