I took a breath.

The others were still talking. Leighton was replying to Love.

“This isn’t how I would like to run this either, but we don’t have time. They want a meeting now and her heat could hit at any moment. Once we’re into their security, we’ll be on standby. The moment she’s in your bond, or if things go south, we can get there in minutes.”

If things go south?

“Are we almost there?” Rook asked.

“Their security is a fucking fortress.” I heard the irritated male snarl through the phone. “They can’t know I’m here and you only gave mehours.”

“He’s good,” Ebony snapped at Rook.

“You said you’ve never worked with him before—”

“There was no one else, but he’s good for it. You think I didn’t do my fucking research?”

I balled my fists, measuring my breathing.

We would get her out. I didn’t care what the cost was. The threat we’d been sent was too much, with the promise that we’d never see her again. It had even set Ebony on edge.

A memory flashed in my mind. Vex bundled up in my hoodie and a plaid blanket in our garden at night, golden eyes molten in the dancing firelight.

I shut my eyes.

I’d caught Ebony earlier and made him talk to me.

“We need to discuss what they’re going to ask for.”

“You aren’t going back to them.” That was all he said.

“She can’t stay there,” I said.

“She won’t.”

“If they ask for me—”

“You aren’t. Going. Back.” He’d grabbed me by the shirt. “Do you understand?”

But it wasn’t that simple.

I knew it wasn’t that simple.

Zeus was pack lead. He hadn’t been as bad as Zephyr, but he’d been cruel. Cold. And he was calculated, always. It’s why they’d done so well in this industry.

Until Ebony.

“You’ll release Drake from his contract.”

“Like fuck we will—”

“That’s not all.” Ebony’s voice was cold. I remember how he’d looked at me right then. Like I was his, and he’d burn the world down for me. Then his gaze drifted back to the pack who’d broken me. “I have enough here to end your career. But that last clip is more than enough to land Zephyr in jail—ifI decided to release it.”

There was silence in the room. An unending terrible silence that Ebony broke.

“I want more than just the contract.”

“Drake.” That was Rook’s voice pulling me from the memory. “You ready?”
