That would hand Vex to us.

With those words, Ebony lifted the branding iron. With a deep, shuddering breath, he pressed it to his neck.

FIFTY-ONE

VEX

The commands didn’t matter. The pain didn’t matter.

I tried to lunge for Ebony as he lifted the iron to his own neck.

He might die.

It was all I could think.

But Zeus dragged me back against his chest, hand still clamped over my mouth.

Ebony’s silver storm eyes found mine.

No—!

But the scent of burning flesh tangled with the alpha’s scents in the room.

It was sickening.

Vile.

I gagged, eyes burning, fear scorching my system.

Again, I threw my full weight into Zeus’s grip. Hecouldn’tdo this.

A loudCLANG!Jolted me from my thoughts.

Ebony had sagged, the cleaving iron slipping to the marble. The connection between us—the one he’d asked of me last night—wavered.

Something was wrong.

Wrong beyond what was before me.

He was my mate, and Iknew… My eyes found Love. His brows were furrowed. He had to know.

Something was wrong!

His eyes met mine, and I tried to convey it somehow, tried to make him understand.

He had to stop this.

Love took a step forward, but Cerus moved, grabbing the gun from Triton and pointing it at Love.

“Stay,” he growled.

My teeth found Zeus’s hand, and I bit down, making him flinch.

“NO!” I screamed. “You have to stop—!” With a vicious tug on the chain around my neck, Zeus crushed my mouth with his hand again.

“His choice,” Zeus breathed in my ear. “He knew the risks. Now staystill.”

Ebony was ashen and panting, his palm pressed to the marble floor. His aura was wavering. His fingers closed around the rod again and I tried to scream once more through Zeus’s grip. When Ebony pressed the brand to his neck for the second time, it was with a low growl of agony.
