The connection between us vanished.

Wild terror shook me but I couldn’t move. Love was still facing the barrel of Cerus’s gun.

Tears flooded my cheeks. Theyhadto stop.

Love took half a step.

“I swear I’ll watch you die before you get in the way of this,” Cerus hissed.

No.

He needed me.

I could barely see through the tears.

He needed me, and I was failing him.

Ebony collapsed, his body hitting the floor. I screamed again, but Zeus’s grip was tight.

“Look at that,” Zeus breathed. “Hetriedto save you, but he’s tooweak.” He sounded pleased.

But Ebony was, through wretches, reaching for the iron, shaking fingers curling around it again.

No…

No!

Again, Ebony seized, a growl slipping out as he gasped for breath. His aura flickered in and out like a shuttering window in a storm.

“It’s better this way,” Zeus breathed to me. “That you get to see this part so close.”

He dragged me down until he was on his knees with me, pinning Ebony on his back.

No!

Let it go.

Don’t do this!

But I couldn’t scream any of it, still silenced.

Even if this worked, if he cleaved and I was free… I sobbed, staring into silver eyes that were so determined. I couldn’t do this without him. Didn’t he know that?

He lifted his hand, but shuddered again, arm falling.

“Help. Him.” Zeus’s command of me was like nothing I’d ever felt.

Every other command he’d ever made fell away for that one order: something so weighted that my hands were moving before I could stop them. My fingers curled around the iron that Ebony held.

I trembled.

Zeus’s grip on my mouth was still agony as he goaded me on.

“Go on,” he hissed. “Help your mate save you.”

Tears were streaking down my cheeks, splashing into silver hair beneath me. Storm cloud eyes held mine, agonised but somehow sure. It was the worst pain I’d ever felt, fighting that command, trying instead to hold the iron away from his neck.

Iwouldn’t do this.
