Even if it hurt. Even if doubt was tearing me to shreds like it never had. I dragged the cleaving iron closer, relishing the shiver of fear that crawled up my spine.

Except, the burn never came.

I forced myself to focus in time to see Vex shatter before my very eyes. Tears cascaded down her cheeks as she shook, pinned by Zeus.

And then her scent hit the room like a storm and her eyes flashed a brilliant gold. For the briefest moment, I felt her with me in the bond—really, truly here.

And she was more than I could have ever imagined.

It had worked. She was safe.

Her scream of fury echoed above me.

The last thing I saw was her turn and lunge for Zeus’s throat.

The world faded, and I felt my pack bonds fray as I tumbled from a cliff into darkness.

FIFTY-THREE

DRAKE

Vex lunged for Zeus, her scent in the room nothing short of wild.

She was feral.

It took me a moment to process what I was seeing: her teeth sinking into his neck. What followed was blood and chaos, as she shattered his commands and killed him, as she destroyed his pack.

I knew because she blazed to life in our bond, which wasn’t possible. Not unless her pack was gone.

She blitzed into our bond, brilliant and jarring, at the same second Ebony’s fear blinked out.

The void he left was almost enough to cripple me. What we felt, though, was nothing to what the other three alphas in the room had.

An errant gunshot went off as Cerus crashed to his knees with a strangled howl. Triton lunged for Vex, murder in his eyes.

I dived after him at the same time as Rook, but Achlys crashed into his way.

Vex.

Fuck.

Triton was—

“NO!” Aura out, I collided with Triton just as he reached her. His hands—about to seize her neck—instead closed around nothing as I bowled him over.

He snarled, green eyes wild as he looked at me, though there wasn’t much left of the alpha I’d once known. Every ounce of nerves and terror I’d felt when I’d learned it was this pack who’d taken her burned through my system in an instant.

In seconds I had him by the neck. The power my aura leant me was overwhelming.

He tried to shove me back, but I’d always been stronger. Then, it hadn’t mattered, but now he couldn’t throw me off. Everything that hewascame flooding in. Every twisted moment, every taunt, every nightmare.

I couldn’t breathe.

He’d become her nightmare.

They’d all become her nightmare.

Because of me.
