His face was ruddy, strange choking sounds coming from him. My hands were around his throat. I should… I should stop.

The thought came too late, fury blinding me.

But I had to—

A glint of silver flashed in my vision. A blade in his hand—

SNAP!

My whole body shook as he went limp, neck twisted at a foul angle in my grip.

ROOK

We had to survive until backup arrived.

I was faced with Achlys. The last I’d seen, Love had slammed the massive dining table against the door before wrestling a gun from the fist of an alpha who’d come through it. Drake had gone for Triton. Vex, covered in blood, hadn’t stopped clutching Ebony.

Make sure she doesn’t let go.It was the urgent whisper of my instincts. A need as paramount as protecting her. One I couldn’t explain.

Triton’s gun had been kicked beneath the couch, and Cerus, recovering from his initial collapse, made for Drake now that Triton was down.

He’d be fine. Drake’s aura was impressive.

I threw Achlys back a pace, and his leg caught the rack of iron pokers beside the fireplace. He tripped. He was wild, eyes void of humanity as he fought like a wounded animal—one set on killing the omega who’d shattered his pack.

He wanted to kill Vex.

I grabbed an iron poker and jammed it against his neck, crushing him against the wall. He howled, eyes wide as he fought me.

Another gunshot sounded from behind me, chilling my blood and almost making me turn, but I didn’t have time. Our bond remained intact. Love was safe.

Almost intact.

Ebony was gone. I couldn’t feel him.

Just make sure she doesn’t let go.

I threw my weight into the iron rod I held, watching as Achlys eyes rolled back and his body went limp. I turned just in time to see the table thrown from the doorway. Love had a gun in his hand and a man at his feet.

Cerus was down. Drake was with Vex and Ebony.

I staggered to Love’s side as he raised the gun with an unsteady grip. Blood was soaking his cream shirt.

BANG!

I jumped as the first black clad man fell forward. Love started, unsure.

Another gunshot, then another and, with a burst of a relief, I saw an alpha I recognised through the door. It was the distinct white hair and red eye of the seer who’d visited with Havoc in the hospital. I grabbed Love by the arm, but he was already lowering the gun.

It was over in moments. More people were stepping through the doorway—alphas, I thought.

I didn’t recognise them until I spotted Leighton grimacing as she stepped over a body. Dressed in a white pant-suit, she was the only one not holding a weapon as she fired off directions. “Bastion, take Denzel, check the rest of the property. I think we got them all, but can’t be too sure.”

This was the backup she’d managed to get together.

“You’re with me.” A pale dark-haired alpha with tattoos up to his chin was waving at the seer. He was shrugging a backpack off as he crossed toward Vex, Ebony, and Drake. I followed, unsure as he knelt beside them.

Now that the initial threat was gone, my thoughts were scattered.
