“Are you sure her system can handle it?”

“Heats are a state of vulnerability. While they can be healing, a traumatic heat is more damaging than any pill.”

I shifted, curling closer to the warmth beside me. To the twilight grass that still felt too faint.

Not until he was safe.

I didn’t want heat, not if it was without him.

EBONY

I woke over and over, nightmares trapping me in a vice. Still, I couldn’t feel them. Not Drake or Love or Rook.

Panic set in again as I blinked through a foul white light and tried to get my bearings.

Where were they?

Gone.

Gone. And my mind was a barren wasteland.

My thundering pulse in my ears was all I could hear. The world span, shapes appeared but didn’t make sense.

Theywere gone.

I reached for my aura, then buckled in agony. There was a sound, something loud… A low, agonised growl that I realised too late was mine, and then—

I stilled as the first shapes finally formed into something that made sense.

Golden eyes.

Beautiful and bright and soothing.

Vex.

And…

And she was… mine. I could feel it.

Horrid, hot, wetthingswere tumbling down my cheeks as she cupped them, bright eyes so wide and fearful.

Mine.

She was still mine.

That was the anchor that finally ripped me back into the world.

“Ebony!”Her desperate voice finally beat down my ear drums, and I realised her fear was of me. Or… for me? I blinked again, looking around.

I was in a hospital, halfway out of a bed, and attached by cords she clutched as she tried to push me back.

…She was still mine…

I remembered then.

I’d been falling into oblivion. The threads of my bonds to this pack were snapping. And then she’d been there, catching me because I’d tumbled into the void.

I sunk back down and let her straighten everything out.
