“I’m not worth that.”

“That’s not your decision,” he snarled. “It was my choice. That is what I have to offer, and now you don’t want it—?”

“No.” My voice broke. “It’s not like that. I just… it doesn’t matter. None of it matters.” I felt like I was in free fall. I didn’t care about where he thought we should lay the blame.

My chest was tight. We were home, they were safe, and there was nothing else stopping me facing the truth. “They…” My voice cracked. “They took her.”

My nightmares.

I was shaking.

Vex, my omega, who’d fought a thousand battles and survived. And I’d given her my monsters.

It didn’t matter why or how.

All that matters was that I had.

Ebony’s chest was heaving and he looked off-balanced. For a brief second, I thought he was going to punch me.

And then I felt a faint tremor in the bond. It was him, and his connection with us strengthened enough in that moment, that I finally understood what he was feeling.

He was… afraid.

It wasn’t just this conversation, either.

He’d been like this since… well, since he’d woken, but his connection had been too weak for me to realise what it was.

“She’s safe,” he said. “And I didn’t die.”

Knowing he was off-balanced over everything threw me, unseating my own anxiety. Ebony was scared?

I frowned.

Of… what, exactly?

Only, I thought I knew. That realisation was shockingly comforting. I cleared my throat. “And… you’re still in the bond.”

“Yeah.” His voice was rough.

I don’t know why, knowing his fear, grounded me so much, but I finally found my footing. “You’re… different,” I said.

His jaw ticked and he took a step back. “I don’t know if her bite is lasting longer this time or if she bit me again in the hospital.”

“Bit you?”

“Yeh it… fucks me up in the head.” He said, but caught my expression. “Don’t fucking tell Love.”

I smiled despite myself but he scowled.

“Don’t get used to it.”

I nodded. Still unable to keep from prodding him again in the bond.

He folded his arms, squaring me with a challenging look. “I heard you killed Triton.”

“Uh… yeah.” I palmed the back of my neck, mood lifting another degree as he flashed me a grin that was much more the Ebony I recognised.

I felt pride from him through the bond.
