“Actually…” I shrugged, fixing my expression. “Cerus too. If we’re counting.”

Cerus had gone mad, and he’d lunged for Leighton after our backup had arrived. Ending him hadn’t off-balanced me like it had with Triton. Triton was arrogant and selfish, but Cerus… he and Zephyr had been cruel. As the light in his eyes had died, I’d silenced a thousand nightmares of my past, and a thousand more for the people he’d never hurt again.

“Good.” Ebony grunted, clapping me on the shoulder before leaving. “They were your kills.”

As he left, I let my hand drop from my neck and the silver scar upon it. The bite he’d offered me the day I’d joined the pack.

His promise of a new start.

VEX

I had time.

Not forever, these daily pills would fail eventually and my heat would come. But I had time to leave the hospital and heal.

So, I did, vanishing into the perfect little bubble that was to be my forever nest.

Myhome.

Before, even when they’d brought half my apartment into this nest, it hadn’t felt like home. Not like it did now.

So, we got to decorating.

On the second day, while I helped Love and Drake put the gigantic skull and crossbones headboard together outside, Rook had dragged Ebony away to help with a ‘super secret’ project.

Later, when I’d returned to the nest, sweaty and exhausted from reading instructions wrong for three hours, he tugged me into the middle of the room and told me to close my eyes.

I hadn’t opened them until he was back, hands brushing my waist.

My breath caught as I looked up. The lights were out, but the entire ceiling was covered in glow-in-the dark galaxies.

“Oh…” I’d been breathless, staring up at them, spotting the constellations that we’d pointed out on our date together.

Then he’d taken my face in his hands and drawn me close.

“I love you, Vex,” he whispered. I stood on my tiptoes, dragging him into the kiss he’d promised me all those nights ago. A kiss for when I was free.

After three days of non-stop decorating, my nest wasbeautiful.

Literally, perfect in every way.

The colour scheme was switched to neutral darks. The enormous skull and crossbones headboard was set up (properly now) behind the pack bed. There was a massive stereo system set up beside the fireplace, with neon lights shaped like musical notes flickering on the walls around it. Warm Edison lights were strung above my bed, and a lava lamp bubbled on my side table.

A circle rattan chair draped with blankets and extra pillows sat beside the tall window, just right for curling up, and at its side was a decorative old fashioned lamp post standing in as a reading light.

Along the wall beside my bed, Drake had nailed up a massive magnetic dream board covered in a dark wood texture. It wasn’t full enough, though, not yet—but it would be.

My favourite lyrics were written across the dark wallpaper in bright paint—that had been fun, though I thought Ebony might have cracked a tooth as I spray-painted words across his custom wallpaper.

Ebony was, day by day, returning to himself. The burns on his neck, already healed enough that they didn’t need bandages—alpha healing. But he was returning in the bond, too.

On the third day, when the nest was almost complete, he took the black choker from my window sill and handed it to me.

“You get to burn it, Little Omega,” he told me. “You freed yourself.”

He took me out beneath the stars to where the others were seated around the roaring flames of the fire pit.

I stepped up to the flames, holding the necklace out, frozen for a long moment.
