“What the hell are you sorry for, Lemon? He’s my brother.”
“And he’s my best friend. He’s pissed at you because of me.”
“I’ve given Jacks lots of reasons to be pissed at me over the years. He always gets over it.”
“I really need him to get over it. Soon.” She looks like she’s about to cry, and it breaks my damn heart in two.
“He will, babe. He just needs a little time to get used to the idea.” Grinning down at her, I push her hair behind her ear. “Took you a little time to get used to the idea, too.”
She frowns up at me. “I’m sorry, kid.”
“What for?”
“If I was even half as much of an asshole as Jacks…”
“You could never be as big of an asshole as Jacks. And not even half as big, babe.”
“I’m sorry it took me so long.”
“You came around. And he will, too. Other than Selena, you’re the thing he loves most in this world.”
“You’re his brother. I’m just his friend.”
“I know I am. But he loves you more than anything. You’re his best friend, babe. He has four brothers. I’m not sure I’m even top two, to be honest. But he’s only got one you. And he needs you in his life enough that he’ll put up with me being here, too. Having you in someone’s life is worth anything. Even putting up with me being around.”
“I’m scared I’m going to lose my best friend, kid.” Her voice catches, and she presses her face against my chest.
“I promise you he’ll come around, babe. There’s no question. Jacks loves you. I know he’s being a total dick right now, but he’ll get over it. He would do anything for you. Even if that means getting used to having me in your life.” I need Lily to be smiling at me and not looking so damn sad. “He’ll understand that you couldn’t resist me. You didn’t stand a chance against all this charm, babe.”
She smiles at me just like I wanted her to. “So, you think you’re irresistible, kid?”
“I mean, I suspected I was before you.”
“And now you’re sure?”
“I mean, I convinced Lily Wilson to let me into her little jean shorts. And not just one time. For months now. I convinced her to keep me around until she was so into me that she announced in front of my whole family that she’s my girlfriend. So now, yeah, I’m pretty convinced that I’m irresistible.”
“You think you’re so freaking cute.”
“Pretty sure that’s you, babe.”
“That I think you’re freaking cute? Or that I’m freaking cute?”

I can’t remember the last time I was this fucking pissed about anything that didn’t have to do with being jealous of Selena even talking to another man. But something about my best friend fucking my asshole little brother has me pissed right off.
Selena made me promise to be on my best behavior today. But that went right out the window the second I saw Jameson in Lily’s living room like he belonged there or something. He doesn’t. It’s Jameson. And it’s Lily. It doesn’t make any kind of sense.
Selena’s sitting on the bed in our bedroom at the farm wearing her favorite Raven’s Ravine t-shirt and a thong. Since we live here six months a year now, my childhood bedroom is now the same room I spend every night in with the woman I can’t wait to marry. She painted and let me get us a new bed. But she kept all the old oak furniture, telling me she loves the country charm. My dad tried to make us move into the primary bedroom because it’s bigger, but Selena put her foot down and said no. She likes us on top of each other in the room where we first spent the night together. And the second place we ever had sex. After I fucked her on top of some bales of hay out by the barn.
