“I did. I am. I’m taking a break.”

“You’re taking a break and having show-and-tell with this prissy princess from the city? First time seeing a horse, lady?”

Kat stares at Jarret and then starts laughing. Lily joins in and the two of them are losing it at him. And that just pisses him off even more. His whole face is so red it looks like steam is about to come pouring out of his ears. Idiot.

“Something fucking funny here?” he demands, taking a step forward.

“Shit man, there're kids here,” I mutter, opening the stall door to show him the two little kids brushing Apple Pie in the corner. Then I look at Kat and smile. “Sorry about the shit thing.”

“Trust me, they’ve heard it before.” Kat turns to her kids. “But remember, grown-ups only swear because they’re having big feelings and they can’t think of the right words to say. We just need to tell them to take a deep breath and let them find the right words.” Then she turns to Jarret, laughing again. “Take all the time you need.”

She doesn’t look at him for longer than a second before turning back to Lily and me. “Why can’t people park next to the barn? Is there a law against it or something?”

“Only in Jarret’s mind,” I mutter, grinning at her. “If it was an actual problem, I would have said something already and politely asked you to move your car. It’s not.”

“Jarret’s just being Jarret,” Lily says, grinning at my idiot brother. He honestly can’t help himself from being an asshole.

“I guess that means you’re Jarret. I’m Kat. This is Aurora and Sam. I would say it’s nice to meet you, but I’m still debating that one.” When she holds out her hand to Jarret, he shakes it. Idiot’s looking her up and down while he’s holding onto her hand like he never wants to let it go. He’s acting like he’s never talked to a woman before in his life.

“Why’s she here?” he mutters.

Kat’s staring at him. “You going to give me my hand back? Or were you planning on keeping it as a punishment for parking next to the barn?”

Jarret tosses her hand back at her like she burned him.

“Why are they here?” he asks again. “This is a working farm. Not a roadside zoo.”

“A zoo? If there’s an elephant here and you’re holding out on me…” Kat mutters.

“The kids wanted to meet Apple,” Lily tells him, shaking her head.

“The kids?” he asks again. The man cannot get out of his own way.

“Aurora and Sam?” the little girl says, frowning up at him.

“Who are you?”

Kat frowns at Lily. “Is he okay? Does he have some sort of short-term memory thing? Sorry if that’s rude. But also, if he does, he won’t remember in a few seconds.”

Before we can answer that my brother is just a jackass, Kat turns to him and gives him a wide smile like she’s talking to a very sick or very old person. “I’m Kaaat. It’s nice to meet you, Jaarrett.”

“Who the hell is she? And how did she end up in my barn?”

“It’s our barn. The family barn. Not just yours. And she lives next door.”

“Next door where?”

“She’s Kat Fraser. Her farm is literally next door.”

“This city princess does not have a farm.”

“Well, that’s just rude. I do indeed have a farm.” Kat turns to the kids. “And that’s why we don’t make assumptions about people. Because when we do…”

“We make an ass out of u and me!” The kids shout back, startling Apple Pie so her little feet dance.

Lily and I both step forward and reach out at the same time to rub our hands down the little horse’s neck to calm her down.

“Since you haven’t taught your kids not to yell around horses, I’m sticking with you never setting foot on a farm before today.”
