She bites her lips and shrugs. “This is… my shop.”

“Your what now?”

“I’m opening up a florist-slash-botanicals shop.” The smile on her face is small, nervous and excited at the same time.

“Seriously, Lemon? That’s amazing! Good for you.”

Her smile turns sweet. Any one of her smiles could have me on my knees in a heartbeat. But I fucking love this one.

“Thanks, kid. It all happened really fast in the last few weeks. I saw the closing sign. And then I found out who owns the building, so that made things a lot easier. And now I guess I have a shop? Only there’s a million things to do before I can open. I need to clear out all this junk. I need to paint. I need new shelves and display cases for the flowers. I need a giant flower fridge. I need packaging. And branding. And bags. And maybe a cash register? I’m really still not clear on the whole cash register thing. The list goes on. And if I keep thinking of all the things on the list, I think I’m going to hyperventilate… So, I’m just going to stop talking now.”

There’s a big smile on my face. She’s finally talking to me again. Face to face. She can talk for as long as she wants, and I’m going to listen to every single word she wants to say to me.

“You’ve got this, babe. I know you do. I remember you telling me when you were like sixteen that you wanted to have your own shop one day.”

“You remember that? You would have only been ten.”

“I remember everything you say to me.”

She frowns, but she doesn’t disagree with me. There’s no point. We’ve known each other our whole lives. We have a million memories together already. And I want to make a few million more with her.

“Why didn’t you tell me about any of this, babe?”

She frowns up at me. “Because I’m not talking to you.”

“Yes, you are. The not talking to me thing ends now. It’s done.”

Walking over to her, I set the iced coffees and bag of bakery bribes down on the retail counter. “Here. Have your coffee and relax. There’s no point worrying about all the stuff you need to do. It’ll all get done. Actually, maybe the caffeine’s a bad idea, now that I think about it.”

“Is that an iced rosemary brown sugar oat latte from next door?”

“Of course.”

“Why do you have it?”

“Because it’s your favorite.”

She narrows her pretty brown eyes at me. “Two questions. How do you know that it’s my favorite? And why do you have it now?”

“I’ll give you two answers. Because I know you, Lemon. And because I was on my way to your house to beg you to talk to me again when I saw you walking in here.”

“You were going to beg me to talk to you?”

“Yeah, because you’re fucking killing me with these late-night calls.”

She gives me a sweet smile that turns out not to be so sweet when she licks the straw in her coffee, sucks hard on it, and then bites it right in front of me. “Really? Because I’ve been having fun. A lot of fun, actually.”

My eyes go wide. “That’s for damn sure clear.”

“So, what’s the problem?”

“The problem is that I shouldn’t be across town listening to you fuck yourself. I should be in your bed fucking you just how you need. How we both need. Lemon, if you don’t fuck me again, I think my balls are going to explode. This is life and death here.”

She grins. “Life and death, huh?”

I nod solemnly at her. “I brought you some almond croissants.”

“You were going to bribe me with almond croissants? That is low. I love Selena’s almond croissants.”
