I led Alejandro onto the dance floor just in time for a slow song to begin. “We don’t have to dance if you don’t want to,” I told him, but he swept me into his arms and began to lead me in a slow waltz.

“I love to dance,” he murmured.

“Really? I had no idea.”

He looked down at me “Why would you. We never spend any time together that is not at work.” He leaned in closer to speak into my ear. “And you fled so quickly that night.”

My breath caught and I looked up at him in surprise. “That night?” Surely he didn’t meanthatnight. Oh, but he did.

“You know the one.” he leaned closer. “I may have been intoxicated, but I would need a serious head injury to forget the feel of your body pressed against mine.”

“But you never said anything,” I breathed.

“Oh, but neither did you,mi cielo. And I would never force a lady to do anything she has no interest in.”

“I . . .” I was at a loss for words. His lips brushed my cheek as he stepped back.

“Think about it.”

Oh, I was thinking about it. I thought about it all the way to the bar, where I immediately downed someone else’s shot.

Chapter Twelve

Idid not stop thinkingabout it the rest of the evening. Not through several more cocktails, not through dancing with various members of the wedding party, not even through some very ill-advised karaoke. And definitely not on the elevator ride back upstairs.

When we got back to the room it was clear that we were all drunk, though maybe not as much as we had hoped. I took my bag and slipped into the bathroom to change. Of course I'd brought along my standard sleep-wear, which suddenly felt much skimpier than it did when I was alone. A spaghetti strap tank top and micro shorts. I stepped out into the room where both men were seated on either side of the bed wearing pajama pants and a conspicuous lack of anything else.

For a moment I swooned, feeling faint. But that was probably the alcohol.

“Ok,” I said, “What are we thinking for sleeping arrangements?”

“I will happily sleep next to you, Kat,” said Alejandro, “But I will not sleep next to the pup.” He wasn’t slurring, but the name-calling carried less venom than normal.

“Really, we’re back to pup again?” said Jason exasperatedly, but the corner of his mouth tugged up. “I thought we’d moved past that.”

“Until you prove yourself to be a real man you will remain the pup.” For a moment, I held my breath. The challenge felt less antagonizing and more. . . a dare?
