And yet...

“Connor.”

“Yeah, I got you,” I said through clenched teeth. “Won’t happen again. I’ll make sure Maci’s gone, or I’ll go to their place...something.”

“Appreciate it. I’ll talk to you later; we’ll set something up for tomorrow night.”

“Sounds good.”

As soon as the call ended, I pulled up Maci’s contact and sent her a message.

Me

I’m sorry about last night

Maci Price

I’m not sorry I made your face green ;)

Which reminded me...hope she didn’t have any plans tonight.

MACI

“If you don’t let me get off the phone, I’ll never finish getting ready,” I hurried to say when Amber started on another list of questions that night. “I love you. I’ll see you in an hour.”

“Ugh. Fine. But we’re picking up this conversation later,” she warned. “I’m not letting Bryce ruin your chances of meeting someone else tonight.”

I eyed where Bryce sat on my couch and suppressed a sigh. “Whatever you say.”

“I’m serious!”

“Yeah, I heard you. Getting ready now,” I said in a singsong voice before ending the call.

Running to my bathroom, I unwound the towel from my wet hair and let it fall to the floor as I reached for my brush and blow dryer.

I was so behind on getting ready, and Bryce was one of those guys who got annoyed if we were late for anything. And after Connor’s embarrassing confirmation that there wasn’t a chance in hell of anything ever happening between us, I didn’t want to start the night with an irritated Bryce. I also wasn’t willing to go through the process of finding someone—anyone—other than Bryce, despite Amber’s insistence.

I couldn’t see the point. Not when we had a perfectly good—

“Son of a bitch. What the fuck?” I yelled and hurried to shut the blow dryer off almost as soon as I’d turned it on.

Tossing it onto the bathroom counter, I spit out as much as I could of what had gotten in my mouth and rubbed at my eyes so I could look in the mirror. My entire head was covered in white powder, but I was seeing red.

I was going to shank the bastard.

“You okay?” Bryce’s voice filled my hallway seconds before he appeared behind me. “What the hell happened to you?”

“I swear to God, I’m going to kill that motherfucker,” I screeched as I pushed past Bryce and stomped down my hallway. Literally.

I looked like a little kid getting ready to throw a fit over not getting any ice cream.

“Language, Maci,” Bryce reprimanded me as he followed closely behind. “And where are you going?”

“Probably to jail.”

“What? Wait, stop walking.” Bryce grabbed my arm and turned me so I was facing him. His eyes bounced over my head and shoulders as bemusement colored his expression. “Who did this, and what is it? Baby powder?”

I scratched at my head and neck as I shook his hand off, then turned to open my apartment door. “Probably.”
