Page 17 of Needing Her

“I said stop,” he demanded in that frustrated tone I’d been trying to avoid just a minute before.

“I just need to kill him, Bryce,” I said with a shrug as if this were an everyday conversation. “I’ll be back in five seconds.”

“Maci.”

I flung Connor’s door open and stormed over to where he stood in the kitchen. Arms crossed over his chest and a smirk on that stupid, handsome face.

“You should really lay off all the coke,” he said, feigning worry. “Or I can get you help if you need it.”

“I will fucking murder you, you stupid piece of shit.”

Connor shifted his arms to press one of his hands to his chest. “That’s the sweetest thing you’ve said to me all day.”

“Maci!” Bryce barked, prompting me to look at him. “I said stop, and I meant now. Get back in your apartment. Do not make me say it again.”

My head jerked back at his callous, demeaning tone because I’d never seen Bryce like that. He was usually carefree and ready to have a good time. His only problem was his incessant need to be on time and suck up to his incredibly rude parents.

That was the first time I’d seen him look and act just like his dad. And it had me frozen in place, unable to move or say anything as I stared at him in open shock.

“I think you need to leave.” Connor’s voice was no longer teasing. It was dark, terrifying, and, if I was honest with myself, incredibly hot. And when I felt his body press up against my back, I had to force myself not to lean into him.

“Maci.” Bryce spoke as though Connor never had and wasn’t currently standing behind me. “Do you know how ridiculous you’re making yourself look right now? Let’s go.”

“I’ve never understood what you see in this tool,” Connor mumbled under his breath before slipping around me and stepping up to Bryce. Even though Connor was a few inches shorter, it wasn’t hard to see why Bryce backed up.

Connor and his intensity...

If I hadn’t been so taken aback by everything, I might’ve smiled.

“I can’t stop Maci from seeing you because she’s an adult,” Connor began in that same cruel tone. “But I can make you leave my apartment, and I strongly suggest you do it voluntarily before I force you to. I don’t like you,” he added as he continued driving Bryce toward the door. “I never have. You don’t take care of Maci, and even after all this time with her, you don’t have the balls to step up and be the man she needs and deserves.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who the hell is this, and what’d he do with Connor Green?

Bryce’s head shot up as he stepped into the open doorway, his glare locking on me. “Maci, get over here. We’re leaving.”

“I don’t know who the fuck you think you are, but if I ever hear you talking to Maci like she’s a child again, this is your only warning that I’ll make sure you never even want to look in her direction again. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“Mace—”

“Leave,” Connor growled over him.

I watched in disbelief as Bryce backed out and Connor shut the door on him.

I’d grown up with four older brothers who had never let another guy near me. They also hadn’t cut me slack when it’d come to...well, anything. Growing up, I’d always had to fight for everything. So, the last thing I needed was Connor coming to my rescue. But damn if that wasn’t the hottest thing I’d witnessed in a long time.

Except now I was confused all over again.

Not twenty-four hours ago, I was Mini to him. He’d made it obnoxiously clear that I didn’t mean anything to him. Why was he so confusing, and why the hell did the baby powder itch so bad?

Connor turned and quickly erased the distance between us, but I’d just remembered why I’d come into his apartment in the first place. So, as soon as he opened his mouth, I punched him in the stomach as hard as my little muscles allowed.

“Fuck, Mace!” he wheezed, bending slightly and clutching his stomach.

“This shit burns and itches really bad,” I yelled accusingly. “I keep scratching my head and skin like I have lice or a rash or something, and it got in my mouth. Since when does baby powder itch like this?”

A hesitant laugh left him as he straightened. “It isn’t baby powder.”

I stopped mid-scratch before furiously starting up again. “You have five seconds to tell me what I’m covered in.”
