“Her meeting with my executive assistant—”

“You didn’t meet with her?”

“We ironed out the basics when we met for breakfast. My executive assistant will run with it until our office manager moves from Silicon Valley to New York. Then, it’ll be her responsibility. She’ll work with Ciara and her team. I’m expediting the office manager’s move. According to Ciara, there will be a lot of back and forth. My executive assistant has other priorities. So do I.”

They’re not going to work together?! “Oh.”

“OPERATION LIGHTING THAT DOESN’T GIVE BRYCE A HEADACHE commences next week!” he says.

A weight lifts off my shoulders and I exhale a long-held breath.

Chapter 36

Sofia

My head is stuck in Bryce’s fridge when strong hands circle my waist.

“I have a personal chef, you know?” he chuckles.

I pull my head out of the fridge and turn to face him. “Breakfast is my way of pulling my weight since I spend so much time at your place.”

“You don’t have to do this, but if you insist.”

“I do.”

“What’s for breakfast?”

“Freshly squeezed orange juice to start, followed by avocado and savory Greek yogurt on toast.”

“Sounds good.”

I pull what I need and place the items on the counter. “I’ve been thinking.”

“Uh, oh.”

“Hey!”

“Joking.” He takes me into his embrace. “What’s on your mind?”

“If your team finds Brad—”

“When my team finds Brad.”

“Okay. When your team finds Brad, I’ll have to tell my sister and my parents the truth about how I met you. Mom just got back from Barcelona and she’s already talking about Sunday dinner to meet you. She’s pissed off she had to hear about you through my sister. She’s going to blow her lid when she finds out I lied about you being a translation client. God help me when she finds out I was an escort.” I let out a breath. “I wonder who’s going to kill me first? Mom, Dad, or my sister?”

He considers me. “The team I assigned to your case is still putting the puzzle together. I know it’s been a week, but at least we’re certain Brad crossed the border to Mexico. Our contacts there are trying to determine if he’s still in the country or if he went south. He won’t elude us forever, but who knows when he’ll pop up on our radar. You’re right. Might as well come clean to your parents sooner rather than later.”

“That was my thinking. Even if you never find him—”

“We will.”

I nod.

I’m not going to argue with him, but keeping my expectations in check is best for my mental state. I don't want to crumble under the weight of disappointment when Bryce confirms Brad Hyler got away with his crime. Four million dollars buys you freedom in many countries on the planet. Brad might be in hiding for the rest of his natural life.

“All that to say, I still have to contend with Todd.”

“Has he been bothering you?” I don’t have time to respond. “Because if he has, Todd (without a last name) and I are going to have words. If he doesn’t back off, I’m going to bury his business six feet beneath the ground.” Bryce growls. “For good measure, I’ll push him in the coffin.”
