“I hope to God it’s more fun than the last event.”

“You don’t get paid to have fun,” he says, his tone snappy. “You get paid to satisfy the client’s needs and fantasies. If he wants you to look formal, you’ll play nice and go buy a new dress. And I don’t care if you have to drink fifty gallons of coffee to stay awake during the so-called boring gala. You’ll do whatever it takes to ensure Mr. Van Der Linden is happy and wants to book you again. Got it?”

“I’m sorry, Todd. You’re right. I’m sure I can find a way to make this evening fun.”

“Better. It’s only eight a.m., you have all day to shop to find something. Sofia—” Todd stops in mid-sentence. If he’s calling me Sofia instead of Amanda, this must be a biggie. “Listen, since it’s happening tonight and it’s last-minute, try to book an appointment as soon as the salons open for hair, makeup, and nails. Good news! Bryce will drop off a thousand dollars at the office just to doll up for the night.”

“That’s very generous,” I mumble, still in shock from the news.

“Extremely generous, but he says it’s a make-or-break night for him. So, look your very best.”

“Thanks, Todd.”

“Stop by the office to get the money before you go out shopping.”

I don’t have that amount kicking around. “I will.”

“Great, I’ll see you then.”

I take a shower, tidy up my place, and do a quick inventory of my closet.

For once I can say I have nothing to wear.

I can get my hair done at a fairly decent price, I can take care of manicure and pedicure myself, if need be, and I can call in a favor for the makeup, but that still leaves me short of a decent dress for a very formal event in New York City.

The thousand dollars Bryce gave me won’t be enough. I have to get to Todd’s office, grab the money, and run to the bank to deposit the money Bryce gave me yesterday.

I get on the subway and pull out my phone while riding to find a few upscale stores that carry affordable designer wear.

That sounds like an oxymoron in a city like New York.

I type a few words in Google on my iPhone. The first result is Rent Couture.

I’m petite and curvy, and the idea of shopping online for a formal event where I’d accompany Bryce leaves my stomach churning.

I scroll all the way down the page and notice they have two stores in New York.

Yay!

I look up just as the doors open, and jump off the train and onto the platform.

I want to keep this conversation private.

I dial the number to the Fifth Avenue location. If plan A doesn’t work, there will be other options in the area. I hope. I look at my watch and book an appointment for eleven a.m., which gives me plenty of time to take care of banking. I jump back onto the subway and head to Todd’s office.

“There was a change in plans,” he says, as I sit on a guest chair.

“Is the event cancelled?”

“No, Bryce felt a thousand wouldn’t be enough to also get you a proper dress and sexy shoes, so now, you have an extra three thousand! You have four thousand dollars to find something that’s going to leave your client begging!”

“Bryce is giving me four thousand dollars to get a dress and shoes?!”

“Yes!” It takes everything in me not to lose my shit and start jumping up and down like an excited kid. “You did something magical to that man.”

“I don’t think I did.”

“In that case, you must have a magic pussy.”
