Rupert looks at me like I have two heads. “Is everything okay, Beckett?”

“Never been better,” I tell him.

“Okay.” Rupert’s eyes shift to where Arianne is standing. “I’ve been dying to get to know her better. Maybe I’ll invite her out for lunch.”

My head whips in his direction. “Come again?”

“Rumor has it Arianne is new in town. I’d love to show her around… maybe take her to my favorite spots.” I don’t think so.

“Do you really want to spend your extended weekend playing tour guide?” I ask. “Who the hell wants to be stuck in LA traffic when they can avoid it?” I’m fully aware of how ridiculous that sounds.

“You just pressed me to find a partner. Arianne is extraordinarily attractive.”

Congratulations. There’s nothing wrong with your eyesight.

“She’s definitely partner material.”

I used to like Rupert. Now, I’m not so sure.

“Since she’s a consultant, I wouldn’t be stepping all over the non-fraternization clause in my contract.”

Well, hell.

“Who knows? Lunch could lead to dinner and then…”

And then I chop off your fucking dick.

“Rumor has it she might be involved with someone,” I tell him. Okay, technically, it’s a white lie, but it’s not hurting anyone. I’m not affirming this as a fact, I’m simply planting the seed of doubt.

“Oh.” Rupert looks genuinely disappointed. “It figures. A woman like that wouldn’t be single.”

“You know what they say.”

“Yeah, all the good ones are taken or married.”

Too bad, buddy. I saw her first.

“She wouldn’t be available for lunch, anyway. Since I’ve been wearing two hats with Rhys in Vietnam, I intend on spending the rest of the afternoon with Miss Buchanan to make sure she’s up to speed.”

“Of course,” Rupert says.

Just then, Arianne walks away with Flora.

Shit.

I stand up and gather my things.

This meeting is adjourned.

Rupert mirrors me.

“I guess I’ll be on my way and get started on that extended weekend, even if it isn’t with Arianne,” he says.

Exactly the way it should be.

“Do you have any big plans for the weekend?” he asks as we walk to the door.

“I have a weekend-long date with an adorable blue-eyed blonde and her best friend.”
