Then I feel it, Talia fades from me and Kastian’s eyes turn back to a light blue. Our ghosts are gone and we’re all that’s left.

“I love you,” I whisper to Kastian. My healed organ is holding together, but barely. I meet Rune’s sad gaze and repeat, “I love you all… I’ll always be a part of you, and you a part of me. Even if I won’t remember.”

Kastian hugs me and lets out a low whisper. “It’s not fair. It’s not fair.I can’t let you go again. I fucking can’t.” I lean against him and let my tears fall.

No—It’s not fair. None of this waseverfair.

Rune finally stands, wrapping his finger in his crimson aura. He walks toward me and I know this is my end. Not forever—maybe I’ll live on as Talia does in someone’s consciousness. I steel my legs as he stops in front of me.

Wren reaches out and wraps his arms around me. He’s still sobbing and trembling but I know he’ll be okay. I know he will bring me back from the human realm again someday.

“We can find another way.” His amber eyes rove my face and when I shake my head he covers his face and curses. There’s no time.

“I know you’ll find me again someday, Wren. Chase me down and drag me back here kicking if you have to.”

He looks up at me, surprised, and for a second his tears stop and he laughs. “I promise.”

Moro sighs with grief and embraces me quickly, pressing a kiss to my forehead. “Tomorrow will be brighter when it sees you again.”

I blink back tears. That's all I can do with his kind words.

Rune steps forward and presses his forehead to mine. I gaze into his crimson eyes and make a final wish.

“I wish… that we can all be happy one day. For Violet to find her heart again, for the fighting to cease, for the Rhythm to be restored. For Wren to reunite with Murph, Arulius to forgive himself, and Kastian to never be alone again.”

I pause and look into his eyes for a few moments.

“But most of all, I wish I could stay with you.” I keep my eyes on his. He clenches his jaw and then brings his flame blade to my throat.

This is it.I brace myself for death. For the dreary rest I hope to find in another life.

“I love you, pup. More than words can say—more than there are stars in the sky and pebbles beneath my feet.” I sob and close my eyes. He tilts my head back, pressing his finger tighter against my throat to slit it. “Look at me, Elodie. One more time—I just want to see your eyes one last time.”

I swallow the lump in my throat but it’s still thick as I open my blurry eyes. His own tears are streaming down his cheeks too and he smiles hopelessly at me, leaning in and pressing a bruising kiss against my lips.

“You made beautiful wishes, pup… I hope every single one comes true.”

He cuts my neck and my blood coats his hand. His eyes turn black and he whispers. “North, I give you my vessel.”

My eyes widen and before any of us can even blink, North’s malicious aura flows from the wound in my neck and into my drop of blood in the snow.

Into my precious.

Irreplaceable.

Rune.
