Violet smiles, clearly enjoying herself today. “There you have it. Kastian, I look forward to seeing you in the war room. Arulius will be meeting us there shortly. Elodie, go do whatever it is you and Rune do behind closed doors.” She says it with a tone that implies we’ve been fucking like two newly bonded Eostrixes.

Gods. She’s not too far off.

Kastian just smiles easily at me—brushing his thumb over my lips. “Remember what I told you.” I dip my head in a nod, then he’s leaving with the others.

Willow gives me one last sneer before she leaves, and my gods, I just want to put my foot so far up her ass.

Naminé waits for the others to file out until it’s just her, me, and Rune left. She runs over to me and throws her arms over my shoulders. I’m stunned for a second before I smile and return the embrace. Her ashy blonde hair smells like lavish herbal soap.

She pulls away and levels me with her amber eyes. “What on earth are they doing to you here?”

I raise a brow. “They’re in the business of misery.” I smirk, even though literally none of this is funny, and she’s instantly laughing.

“I’m worried about you! Stop joking around.” She pushes me back playfully.

I smile and warmth fills my chest. “I’m fine, don’t worry, okay? Let's meet in the library again soon.” I pull her in for another hug and she squeezes me extra hard before slipping away and flashing me one last smile as she leaves.

Rune shakes his head at me and holds his hand out. I quickly grab it and wrap myself around his arm as we leave too, heading down the corridor to our west wing.

“I’m so glad you’re okay.”

He grunts and looks down at me. His crimson eyes are a soft landing for my weary soul.

My spine tingles.“Thanks to you.”

“I don’t know what I would do without you, Rune…”

He frowns a little and looks ahead.“You’d conquer the world and forget about me. Raise hell like the spunky little pup you are.”

I bite his arm and he groans as my fangs pierce his skin through his sweater. “I’ll bite you twice as hard if you ever say that again!”

He glares at me with heat in his eyes.“Which part? That you’re a brat or you’d forget about me.”

I’m bending down to bite him again but he takes off running and I let out a laugh as I chase after him

His deep, beautiful laugh fills my head the entire way back to my room.

The snowball hits my face so hard I fall flat on my ass.

My wings get engulfed in the snow. Every inch of my feathers are filled with the cold fluff.

I let out a laugh as hot tears roll down my flushed cheeks. The cold stings my nose but I’ve got a lock on him now. I throw my snowball as hard as I can and it nails Rune right on the cheek.

“Ha!” I shout as I’m retreating behind the corner of a cottage. I have no idea who lives here, but they’re probably thinking there’s a war raging out here. My hands entangle in the ivy vines that climb the stones and I smile at the greeting.

Life exists even in winter, and today, Nesbrim seems especially enchanting.

Rune hardly even flinches at the assault from my snowball and smiles wickedly back at me, revenge burning in his eyes.

I let out a squeal as he drops all his premade snow ammunition and charges after me. I make it all of ten feet before he’s tackling me into the snow and burying us both in the process.

I’m laughing so hard my ribs are burning and he’s laughing along with me in my mind. What I wouldn’t give to hear him laugh out loud.

Yesterday sucked with the shit that went down in the torture room, but today’s a new day and Rune’s idea of having a snowball war was genius.

I’m shivering within seconds and he rolls us so that he’s on the bottom and I’m resting safely on his chest. I raise my head and look down at him.
