“You should teach Rune how to pursue his victims better,” I mutter as I drop two spoonfuls of sugar into my coffee. Wren scowls at me.

“Why would I teach your guard to chase you better? Don’t you want to get out of here soon?” he asks carefully. My chest tightens at the thought of leaving Rune behind and I shake my head.

“Rune’s not just my guard, he’s…” I stop to think because I don’t even know what I’m trying to say. “He’smore.”

Wren nearly chokes on his drink as I awkwardly say the latter.“Okay, Elodie, what’s going on with him?”

Gods.

“Nothing.”

“Mm-hmm—I don’t believe that for a second,” he deadpans and I smile wickedly at him. His amber eyes fill with amusement and I can’t stand it.

“Gods—fine. I’d rather be fooling around with the Dreadius than Arulius, okay?” I whisper across the table in case any of the golden Eostrix’s soldiers are in the café.

Wren laughs and nods. “Just be careful.” We look at one another for a few minutes and just share the peace of this moment while we drink our coffee.

“How is Margo? And Moro…”

His voice is light as he replies, “She misses you so fucking much. But I can see it in her eyes—she knows as well as I do that we will all be together again. Moro sees it too. We all know that we’ll see you soon, Elodie. You’re not alone. You’ve never been alone in this.”

Six months.

Six long and lonely months I’ve waited to hear those words.

But have they come too late? Because once I hear them I realize…

I’m not alone anymore.

Even before Kastian and Wren came for me.

I’ve had Rune—and he put my heart back together more than I think anyone ever could.

My gaze grows distant and Wren leans forward, brushing his thumb over my bottom lip. Our eyes meet and he gives me a familiar smile. “You’re still as beautiful as the day we met.”

“So are you.”

We share a laugh and it spills into the darkest parts of me, casting away the dread that nestled into me months ago.

Thank you, Wren, for not forgetting me.

Elodie

Rune was looking for me on the opposite side of the city. Gods, he’s horrible at chasing.

I said goodbye to Wren by the café and he promised he’d be back soon. We talked for hours and it was really hard to say goodbye. He’s laying low for now, but just knowing he’s close makes my mind feel a million times lighter.

Rune gives me a puzzled look because I’m absolutely glowing from my time with Wren. My heart is buzzing with hope and a newfound motivation.

And you know what, he’s right—I have to do this. Not just for Murph and all the dead, but for the entire Rhythm.

After we get back to my chamber I strip into my undergarments and leave my wet clothes on the floor. Rune’s already licked my pussy like a savage animal so I don’t care if he sees me in nothing but my bra and thong. I like his eyes on me anyway.

He does the same, except his clothes get hung on the doorknob to properly dry. Bastard is always making me look bad. He’s still pissed that I left him searching for me all afternoon.

“You’ll have to get better at chasing me, Rune. No sense in pouting about it.” I pat his shoulder playfully and he gives me a heavy frown that makes me laugh.
