We admired them in silence for some time.“Sometimes I feel like I should thank you.”

“Thank me for what?” he mused with a chuckle.

“You didn’t give up on the girl of your dreams, and because of that, I found the girls of mine.”

We glanced at each other then, and could see the prickling emotion in the other's eyes. We both looked away, huffing a laugh as we swallowed our tears like the manly men we pretended to be. Carter slapped my back again as he walked over to Penelope and stood behind her, wrapping both arms around her shoulders. Her emerald engagement ring glinted in the harsh overhead lighting as she rubbed a thumb across my daughter's cheek before handing her back to Macie. Carter pressed a kiss to the top of Penelope’s head as my wife nuzzled Allie against her chest.

I stepped over to the bed and crawled in behind Macie, pulling her back against me. I put my hand over hers at the place where she held our daughter. Allie looked up at us both with her huge brown eyes and I swore I could see the recognition in them. As if she already knew us, knew this was where she belonged. As if Macie noticed it too, she turned her head to me with pure astonishment.

The smile she gave me next was the brightest thing I’d ever seen. I again found myself thanking luck or fate or God or whoever the hell else had a hand in bringing her to me. Bringing them both to me. In all the different universes that existed, in all the infinite chains of events that could’ve been, as I watched my wife stare down at our baby girl, I was certain that this moment was in every single one. I held them both a little tighter, forever grateful they were mine, and whispered, “You’re sparkling, Mace,” against her ear.

Macie giggled lightly, and at the sound of it, our daughter let out a coo.

The first noise she’d made that wasn't a cry.

We all gasped before we began laughing.

“I think I’ve been outshined,” Macie said through her happy tears.

“I think I’m the luckiest man alive,” I replied through my own.
