“Listen to Brody.” She rubs my head gently and lets me go, paying attention to her coffee.

“He takes his work so seriously. No wonder he’s a billionaire!”

My jaw drops. “He’s a… billionaire?”

Sandra simply nods, eyes fixed on the TV, as if withholding that information was something reasonable to do.

“Are you saying I had a billionaire working for me this whole time?” I ask again, my disbelief growing.

“Makes you see how humble he is.”

She sips her coffee, not looking at me. I remain quiet, staring at her, until she turns to me and says, “You saw the size of his office!”

I shake my head, letting go of the subject for now, but still mulling on how someone with amounts of money I can’t even count would agree to be a bodyguard for someone like me.

A lazy morning goes by. Sandra and I leave to go get lunch out, then head for the afternoon rehearsal, this time with my regular band.

It’s almost seven in the evening when the ride I booked drops me off at the foot of the staircase leading to my building’s front door.

My heart leaps a little when I see who is there. Sitting on the front steps, I find Brody, waiting for me with his usual serious and hard to read expression on his face.

The time for the stakeout he wanted to do has come.

“I thought we had agreed to meet at six o’clock.” He frowns while getting to his feet, a long and narrow case in his hands.

“Got caught in the rehearsal. Sorry I’m behind schedule.” I point at the case. “Please tell me this is not a sniper rifle!”

He smirks, “It’s a surprise.”

I give him a good shake of my head and grab the keys from my purse to open the door. The spare key from under the mat is now safely in the house.

As I do so, I also give Brody a discreet look - he’s wearing sneakers, dark wash jeans and a white t-shirt under a gray jacket, and there is no sign of his trademark shades.

I am loving this sexy, casual look on him. Although a part of me really wants that jacket and shirt off.

“Busy day?” Brody asks me just to make small talk.

“U-hum,” I nod over my shoulder as we climb up the steps. “Not so much in the morning, but the afternoon was wild.”

“Hum.” He walks behind me. “Must be fun.”

“It is!” I say with excitement, getting to my apartment door. “It’s where I always wanted to be and what I’ve always wanted.”

I babble on about how this had always been my dream and how I’d always known music would be my life, whether it was teaching or touring, although I’d always preferred to make it big. I could still barely believe it was happening.

“Nice.” He smiles at me, a beautiful smile that brings heat to my cheeks, but I tell myself it doesn’t mean anything, that it couldn’t. He was just here doing a job and that it was part of his professional and protective nature to be like this.

But I really hope I am wrong.

“Please make yourself at home!” I tell Brody, opening my arms wide after dropping my bag over the couch.

“Sure thing.” He walks straight to the kitchen window, completely ignoring me.

“I’m going to take a quick shower, okay? Be right back.” He nods his head without looking at me, paying more attention to his case than anything else.

I move to my bedroom and leave the door open as I undress, just for the thrill of possibly being seen by the strongman.

He hasn’t called me princess today; maybe he wants to keep things professional now that we’re alone?
