I hear Lily sigh. She doesn’t say anything, but I have an idea: she is going to have to pause her shows to take care of the child.

What if the child is mine?

I’m terrified. I can barely deal with one kid, let alone two. I decide to quit my eavesdropping and come out and greet the women, acting nonchalant.

“I got a high-definition recording,” I say, patting the thumb drive in my pocket. “And the directions to the stalker.”

“Is he really from New Jersey?” Lily asks, eager.

I shake my head. “Brooklyn. Somewhere there, but it’s a starting point.”

Sandra sighs, “I hope you’re right. This is becoming a nightmare.”

“I agree,” and I nod. “Now let’s go. I’ll treat you girls to lunch.”

Sandra and Lily beam at the idea of food, since it’s past midday and all our stomachs are growling.

We walk out of the building and find the car, luckily untouched. After a morning like today, you just never know what to expect.

“Where do you want to go?” Sandra asks Lily, an arm around her shoulders.

“Hum,” Lily says. I open the door and they go in, both in the back. “Chicken and waffles with pepper and a bucket of spicy maple syrup!”

“That’s a very specific request for someone who was sick this morning,” I say softly, looking at Lily through the windshield mirror.

And she looks back at me, terrified. I was trying to be discreet, but she reacts like one who is guilty and caught in the act.

“Did you tell him?” I hear Sandra loud whisper to her as I start the car,

No, she didn’t tell me. I just happen to overhear.

“No!” Lily laughs almost hysterically to disguise the situation. “I was just feeling sick when he picked me up early this morning!”

I drive quietly as they talk, following directions on my phone to the closest diner that serves what she wants. They are discussing the show, upcoming TV appearances, and the upcoming tour.

Sandra’s phone rings and when she picks it up, Lily turns her attention to me. “Do you know where to go?” she asks sweetly.

“I have an idea,” I say, with a smile she doesn’t see.

After a moment of silence, she continues, “Are we there yet?”

“What are you? Ten?” I snicker. “We’re almost there.”

I stop, not even three minutes later, in front of a diner joint apparently famous for its chicken waffles. Lily leads us inside, eager to eat.

There is a hostess standing behind a podium. Before she can greet us, Lily asks, “Do you have chicken and waffles?”

“We do, ma’am,” she says politely. “Let’s get you all seated, shall we?”

Shortly after she seats us, a waitress arrives. Once again, before she can speak, Lily pipes up, “Chicken and waffles, please!”

Slightly taken aback, the waitress quickly regains her composure. Smiling she jots it down with a “no problem!” then looks around at the rest of us expectantly.

“Yeah, uh…” Lily puts a finger in her dimple, “Do you have spicy maple syrup?”

“No, sorry, ma’am, we don’t have that.”

“Oh, okay.” I see Lily’s shoulders slump, disappointed. “I’ll eat it anyway. What do you guys want?”
