“Will any of it pertain to my future tasks, sir?” she asks, straight to the point, business as usual.

Taken aback by such directness, I step away from the counter, then quickly regain my composure.

“I like you, Nena,” I say. “You’re due for a raise.”

She smiles at me as I move back, looking like she will devour me if I do something out of the ordinary.

I think Nena has only worked here for so long because everybody is too afraid to fire her.

I enter my office and the phone rings again. Not recognizing the number, I hangup without answering, and turn on the do not disturb for good measure.

The damn phone keeps on vibrating on my desk as I revise what I have to do for the day. Truth be told, my head is everywhere but my work.

I might be getting a new son soon. Or daughter. I remind myself that it is just a suspicion right now, but I feel like getting mildly used to it will be better than ignoring the possibility.

Running through the spreadsheets, I’m now happy to know that we will have plenty of security personnel for the tour. I take notes to start making phone calls soon, and I turn on the computer.

Opening the browser, the first thing I look for is ‘Lily Rockwell pregnant,’ and I’m bombarded with results.

All the gossip sites say that Lily confirms the story, but I, the father, am denying everything.

The phone keeps on vibrating, writing a symphony of chaos alongside my gritting teeth. I pick it up to turn it off for good, but then recognize Sandra’s name among the callers. I call her back the same instant.

“I thought you were busy,” she says.

“Explain to me, Sandra, how all these newspapers, magazines and gossip sites have my number?” I demand to know.

“Ow, they got you too!” she says regretfully. “They got Lily’s new phone number too. I told her to shut it off.”

“Yeah, she needs to,” I say. “Where is she now?”

“At home, with one of your bodyguards. Probably still asleep,” Sandra says.

“Good,” I breath more easily. “Listen… Can you come here for a while?”

“Where are you? Home, office?”

“Office,” I say. “Should be quick.”

“Um… Give me a sec,” she says, probably looking at her calendar app. “I can drop by real quick after lunch time. Actually, do you want to go grab lunch - just the two of us?”

“Brilliant,” I say, “where do I pick you up?”

“My apartment. It’s in between you and the stadium.”

“Alright, see you then.”

Sandra says goodbye and I hang up again, I leave the phone face up on the desk, just in case she needs to call again. Or Lily. Lily might call too.

But why would she call me anyway when I still haven’t answered her question?

Time to stop being so neglectful.

I go back to my tasks, call my head of personnel to line up the people for the show, get the signed contracts from Sandra and Jonathan forwarded to administration, and check with my lead field officers on how our other clients are doing.

It’s twenty past ten when my desk phone rings, and Nena informs me, “the consultant you called is here, sir,” she says.

“Let them in,” I order.
