Our drinks arrive. Still a few minutes until our dishes.

Now I’m left with Sandra to talk amenities, but that’s the last thing I want to talk about.

My mind is still preoccupied by that video call. There’s no way I can let Lily out of my sight now.

“Forget what I said about stepping back. I’m not going anywhere.” I inform my sister, much to her relief.

Chapter Fifteen

LILY

Ibidmygoodbyesto the crowd and run off the stage and into Brody’s arms.

“How was I?” I ask, not sure why I’m seeking validation, but wanting to hear his opinion.

“Incredible,” he replies, smirking.

I want to look in his eyes, but those damn sunglasses are in the way. He is measured in his affection, leaving me unsure if he’s backing off, or just wants to keep things professional.

“Going to watch Sweets’ show?” I ask him while I grab a towel from a staffer.

Brody shrugs. “I’m here for as long as you’re here.”

“Then you’re off for the night!” I say, guiding him by the hand towards the dressing room.

We meet Sweets on our way there, in a rush to get on stage. “Hey! Break a leg!” I say, offering my fist for her to bump.

“Thank you, sweetie!” She says, bumping fists with me. “I hope my show is as good as yours!”

She leaves, and I’m all giddy with what she said. I assume Brody knows exactly how I’m feeling, because I’m smiling from ear to ear, and I’m unable to stop skipping through the corridors.

“You’re happy, aren’t you?” Brody says, watching over me with care.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” I giggle. “We just played for the biggest crowd of our careers, and I hear from a huge pop singer that my show wasgood?” I squeal.

We enter the dressing room, me still guiding Brody by the hand. I only let him go once I see my chair, which I drag near the table.

“Sandwich?” I offer him a pastrami on rye, feeling increasingly awkward.

“No, thanks,” he declines politely, but reaches with a hand towards the table. “Maybe a cookie.”

He unwraps the cookie while I unwrap my sandwich, the hunger of a wolf eating my insides.

“Is it only me or am I more excited about all of this than you?” I ask without looking at Brody.

He has a mouthful of double chocolate chip cookie when I see him raising an eyebrow to me. “This is your day, Lily. No one should be more excited than you are,” he says after swallowing.

“Hum,” I groan in a tone of complaint, swinging my feet under the chair.

“You seem disappointed with my answer,” he says, approaching me from the side as to not block my access to the food.

“Kinda,” I say. “I mean, you’re right. But that’s not what I’m really talking about.”

I can hear his breathing go heavy, and his hand squeezes my shoulder.

“You need to get that pregnancy test.” It’s all he has to say.

His hand remains on my shoulder, and I relish in what little comfort his contact can offer me. After a moment of silence, I say “If I’m not pregnant… Will I still mean something to you?”
