Now he leans down and embraces me from behind, maybe reading between the lines and sensing how needy I’m feeling. He gently kisses my temple, and caressing my hair he whispers in my ear, “You will always be important to me.”

“That’s too vague,” I say, pouting.

“Huh…” he lets out a nasal sound. “But it is the truth,” he continues. “Even though I don’t know what the future holds, I know one thing: I really, really care about you, Lily. And those words aren’t something just any woman can get out of me.”

I twist around in my chair, facing him, with a pleased smile on my lips.

“You mean it?” I ask in a singsong voice.

Brody simply nods, and just leans down to kiss me. He’s about to deepen the kiss when I hear the characteristic steps of my bass player coming into the room.

“Oops!” Chris says, halting his pace. “Am I interrupting?”

“Yes!” I say, stern.

Brody and I adjust ourselves while Chris decides if he wants to stay or to go.

“Say what you have to say, son,” Brody pleads.

“Huh, right!” Chris gestures around as he speaks, “Sweets Tyler’s manager got us into the VIP section, right in front of the stage. Wanna go see the show with everyone?”

He dances around, ridiculously comedic, making me laugh. All the while, Brody just smirks with amusement. I then look at my strongman, longing eyes extended his way.

“Do I want to?” I ask him with a raised eyebrow.

Looking around from me to Chris, Brody just shakes his head and laments. “You better not, I’m sorry,” he says. “Even if I’m with you, it could be easy for someone to get to you.”

And I shrug to Chris in an apology, “Maybe next time!”

Chris bids us goodbye and leaves in a hurry to join the rest of the guys. I’m once again alone with Brody, and I’m perfectly happy that way.

“Going to stay here?” he asks, watching me go for a can of soda.

“You said I can’t watch the show,” I say, resigned.

“You can watch from backstage.” Now he’s the one shrugging.

“Alright, let’s do it, then!” I grab him by the hand and guide him back to the sidelines.

Sweets show is a spectacle of pyrotechnics and special effects.

And all the while I watch it with Brody holding me, and I’m feeling light-hearted, content, and happy.

The show ends, encore and all. Sweets comes out covered in sweat. She is tired, but smiling, with the sense of a job well done stamped on her face.

“There’s a party going on at the hotel’s rooftop terrace, meet me there!” she says, grabbing me by the wrist and speaking loudly over the still roaring crowd.

“Alright!” I say as she runs by, probably heading for a shower.

I pull Brody away from the noise and confide in him excitedly, “I got invited to a party!”

“Nice,” he smiles with restraint. “Where?”

I blink, thinking for a second. “She said ‘at the hotel’… Which hotel is she staying?”

“I know which one,” Brody says without batting an eye. “There’s a courtesy limo waiting for you.”

“Leave it for my band. Let’s go in your car.”
