“You’re going to do that show, Lily,” I say. I don’t phrase it as a question or an order, just a statement of fact.

“But I want to stay with you…” she mutters against my lips.

But I press two fingers against hers and reply, “Sweets might get a replacement opening act. And if people like it, it’s goodbye to you. And I am not going to see your star fade because of me, Lily.”

“Brody…” she grows uneasy, “You don’t understand…”

“Please don’t leave me with this guilt,” I hold her firmly by the shoulders, looking at her deep in the eyes, trying to make her understand. “I’m grabbing my phone right now and doubling your security. You’ll be safe and sound.”

“It’s not a matter of security, Brody. It’s a matter of you being okay!” she says in protest.

“But I am okay,” I caress the bare skin of her arms. But I’m at the end of my strength for now, and my mind quickly wans away.

“I’ll be right there with you tonight, if not tonight, tomorrow. All will be back to normal and—”

I yawn, a big one. Lily takes pity on me and takes a step back upon seeing my state. “You must be tired… I better get going.”

But I grab her wrist lightly and look at her dead on, “Please promise me that you’ll do the show,” I say.

She averts her gaze from me, looking up and down, and from side to side. With a sigh, the words finally come out of her mouth, “Fine. But you better be back soon!”

I pull her closer and kiss her, and with my body let her know that I will always be by her side. She returns it candidly, still afraid to hurt me, but I incentivize her hands over my naked chest and gasp for air at every single touch she gives me.

Sensitive, I’m feeling hot and flushed, and glad I still have enough blood to send to parts other than my brain. She trembles just slightly in my arms, moaning softly at my advances, subtly writhing every time I squeeze her closer and closer to me.

The monitor checking my vitals starts to beep faster as my heartbeat and blood pressure go higher, and soon enough, the doctor is in the room to check what’s going on, quickly separating us.

“What’s going on in here?” he asks, as if not knowing what we were doing.

“Did I do something wrong?” Lily asks, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear.

“He shouldn’t get agitated like this, no matter how good the intentions are,” the doctor smiles to Lily while pushing her gently away to double check my vitals. “I think you should leave, miss.”

I let out a grunt, disappointed, and she also groans in complaint. “Remember what you promised me!” I say, as I watch her reluctantly move away, with steps going backwards.

“I won’t forget it…” Lily says in fleeting voice, blowing me a kiss as she disappears behind the door.

The doctor feels my wrist, then my forehead, takes notes of what he sees in the monitor and says, “You should rest a little, Mr. Garrison. Take a nap!”

I yawn yet again, “That’s not a bad idea, doctor. I just need my phone first.”

I point to my blazer, neatly folded over the chair a yard away from the bed. The doctor hands it to me, and once I pick up my cell phone, he returns the blazer back.

“One phone call and it’s night-night for you, Mr. Garrison!” The doctor warns me playfully while leaving the room.

“It’s a promise, doc,” I say, dialing the number I need.

The phone rings. After a few tries, my head of security picks up. “Boss? How are you doing?” His name is Tyler, same as Sweets, and his voice is surprised and worried.

“Almost asleep, but I’ll survive,” I say, “Listen: any idea how that knife got through security?”

Tyler huffs with disdain, “He dropped the knife on the way out, we surrendered it to the police,” he says. “It still requires some analysis, but one of the guys says it’s something like carbon fiber, which goes invisible through the metal detector.”

“And what about the pat down?” I ask, getting angrier and angrier.

“If the perp hid it in his crotch, it’s quite possible the man in charge just skipped it,” he says, sounding ashamed.

“Discover who that was,” I say. “I’m going to need to have a talk with him.”
