Now she’s the one to nod, eyes glancing back towards the place she came. “She is. They’ll let her in in a second, but I need you to listen to me first.”

I lean back, eyes semi-closed, hardly awake, but doing my best. “Then say it,” I shrug.

“You need to convince Lily to perform the show, Brody!” she pleads. “She doesn’t want to get out of here without you!”

“At a time like this, you’re worried about money, Sandra?” I ask. The drugs keep me on sounding calm, but in truth, I’m beyond peeved.

“It’s not just money, Brody!” she goes on, her volume right above the acceptable level for a hospital. “This girl can ruin her career!”

I beg for her silence with the palm of my hand splayed out facing her, as a buzzing in my ears begins to build.

“Calm down, Sandra,” I whisper. “Listen, let her come in and I’ll talk to her. I just can’t promise much due to the condition I’m in.”

Sandra sets her mouth into a thin line, and then lays a hand over my hand, tapping it delicately as one touching a flower.

“I’m sorry,” she says, “I’m asking too much of you. Did they tell you how long you are staying here?”

“At least eight hours,” I inform her, and then I promptly yawn like a tired dog. “It’s enough time for them to monitor my vitals and for the medication to wear off.”

I see my sister nodding again, her eyes now distant, as if not wanting to acknowledge what’s in front of her. “I wasn’t even there…”

At that, she falls into tears, crumbling even more once I touch her hair and invite her to lay against my shoulder, which she refuses.

“Don’t worry. It’s not your fault,” I say.

She wipes her tears away and takes a few deeps breaths, breathing with difficulty through her now congested nose.

“I’ll let Lily in. If you think you can see her, that is.”

“I can,” I say, smirking, “let her in.”

Sandra kisses me on the cheek and leaves without a word. Soon, her quiet footfalls are replaced by loud rushing ones from knee-high boots.

“Brody!” Lily runs to me and kisses me, a little bit more intense than necessary. I hiss in pain, causing her to quickly pull back. “Oh God, did I hurt you?!”

“Just a little,” I wince, adjusting myself over the hospital bed.

“Why didn’t you shoot him?” she asks with her hands in her mouth.

“Wait…” I raise my index finger to her face, “That’s a hard shift of attitude for someone who was so worried about him just a few days ago.”

Lily looks at me sideways, hurt and downbeat. “He could have killed you, Brody!”

“I’m fine,” I reach for her hand to calm her down. “It was a breach in security. There were metal detectors everywhere. He shouldn’t have been able to get through with a knife.”

“Then how did he do it?” she asks with a shrug of her shoulder.

“No idea. Maybe someone was out for a coffee. Maybe the knife was ceramic. Most likely someone is getting fired soon,” I lay my free hand on my chin in a comical stance, which finally earns me some giggles.

“You’re my hero now,” Lily says, caressing my jawline, which is a better pain reliever than morphine. “More than ever.”

“I don’t really feel like one but thank you.”

“When are you getting out of here?” she approaches me with care, a hand hovering over my stomach, too afraid to touch it.

“Late night,” I say, pulling her close for a kiss.

We exchange little naughty pecks on the lips, but she’s too scared to go deeper with my condition. But to prove I’m doing okay, I grab her face with both hands and kiss her deeply, driving her to squeal a little in surprise.
