After unfolding the piece of paper, I take a deep breath and commence, “Princess… I’m not good with public speaking unless it’s to order people around.”
The guests laugh a little bit harder than before.
“But you’re the one who orders me around here, so all I have to say is that I will always be with you, for better or worse, and with the beautiful son you gave me. I want to say…”
I stir a little and need the paper to guide me.
“I want to say that you are the sweetest of angels, and I feel privileged, every day, that you were sent to me.”
I stop to the sound of more clapping. The next part will be trickier because of the shaking of my hands, but I can handle anything for her.
“The rings, please.” It’s Eric’s time to shine. He steps forward with the basket, offering it to the minister.
The minister takes one of the bands and hands it to Lily, and pointing the microphone to her, begins talking.
“I, Lily Andressa Rockwell…” he says.
“I, Lily Andressa Rockwell…” she repeats.
“Betroth you with this ring…”
“Betroth you with this ring…”
“Till death do us part.”
“Till death do us part.”
She holds my left hand and places the wedding band around my finger, making me feel complete for the first time in a long while.
“Brody?” the minister calls for my attention, placing Lily’s ring in my hand very carefully.
“I, Brody John Garrison…” he says.
“I, Brody John Garrison…”
“Betroth you with this ring…”
“Betroth you with this ring…”
“Till death do us part.”
“Till death do us part.”
The minister takes back the microphone for himself “With these words, and the power invested in me, I now declare you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!”
He announces it with such cheer that the guests now holler like in one of Lily’s shows.
I take Lily in my arms, to dip her and kiss her as passionately as I can. When I pull back, I see that I messed up her lipstick, and I do my best to correct my mistake gently with my thumb.
“How do you feel?” I ask her amid the noise.
“Amazing!” Lily clings to my neck like an excited fan.
She kisses me one last time and goes to pick up the baby from her mother, and walking together with Eric, we head for the reception in the hotel nearby.
